Mercator projection

Recommended Posts

Base radar shouldn't have a circular shape on the map, rather it should follow the same map projection function that is applied to the world map (presumably Mercator).

For example it should be possible to cover most of North-America, Siberia and Northern Europe from a single base in Greenland.

Airplanes and UFOs should also travel "faster" on the map when at higher latitudes.

The set-up in the game isn't realistic but it is far more understandable and visually pleasing to the average gamer than the correct mercator projection would be. The radar range circles in particular would look ridiculous once you started getting towards the poles.

This is a subject which has previously been discussed to death. The end of the discussion was that there are far more people who don't care then there are who do.

...and the only reasonable and playable version that will not provoke complains from realistic-fans or smooth-gameplay-fans would be to have a real globe map like in the original game. This was discussed before too.

Reason why it is not in here was engine limitations and amount of work, afaik.

Aye I was surprised as well that I didn't find anything in the forums about this. Must have looked for it wrong.
