My issue was I installed Xenophobia started a new game and my soldiers have no weapons... I then added more mods like XCE and now my game wont open...

Welcome to game and forums!

Xenophobia is an old mod with tricky issues. Probably your game is broken. Clean uninstall and reinstall the game and carefull which mods needs which versions. Xenophobia already doesn't work with the games newest versions. I advise you to try stable mods, or first just play the vanilla game first. Mods are mostly harder and needs some game experience.

You can use steam workshop mods without problems.

Xenonauts versions 1.5 and beyond features a "modular mod loader", first pioneered by llunak in the Community Edition of Xenonauts. Provided the mod you want to use is compatible with the mod loader (accessible from "modding tools" in the Xenonauts launcher), then you can easily install and run mods. Xenophobia, in all its variants is unfortunately incompatible with 1.5x and any version of Community Edition. You must specifically have 1.09 or lower - you can check this by looking in the top right hand corner of the Xenonauts launcher and seeing which version you have.

X-division is more of total overhaul than conversion. What X-division has done and previous mods didn't is various new aliens in form of "specialist ". What this do is that instead of adding whole new race, mod introduce sub-tier ranks of existing races which their own characteristics.Of course xenomorphs (if you played XNT you know what they are if not you will find out soon) are in mod too.

There is also couple more interesting approach in mod that no one has taken but I will leave that to you to find out if you decide to try X-division,however bear in mind that mod is hard so it's recommended to play it after you played vanilla.

If you heard about XNT and want to give a shot I then recommend playing it with Out of the Sun: geoscape overhaul for XNT for few reasons:

One would be that XNT v6 is no longer supported by original devs, therefor it's filled with bugs, balance issue and so on (I am one of devs). This mods tries to address those bugs and balance problems, also it lowers initial difficulty of mod which makes XNT more accessible for casual/mediocre players.

Second author of this mod mod has proven to be true fan of original concept and tries to perverse it,making changes only where necessary without compromising original ideas.

Third he already had made few useful patches for XNT which fix annoying things,so he knows what he is doing and he is active so you can expect frequent updates and support.

  • 2 weeks later...

as someone who is new to the game, Is the out of the sun mod what people would suggest as a good mod to start with?

I played UOF defense to death back in the day, and played xenonauts back when it was a community project. Is there a good, easy to browse list of updated mods available anywhere?

Edit: oh...and what's the community version I see mentioned?

Followup question about the CE edition: I have the game on Steam and I've been modding it for a while. I was under the impression that the Steam version of the game was the CE edition by default, since the list of features in that thread Max_caine linked is already in the game I'm playing (except the memorial screen). I went to the betas tab to check and my version is not CE edition. So my question is: did those features listed in that thread migrate from CE to vanilla, or am I missing something?
