Ma told me there'd be days like this

At first, I didn't really believe what I heard on the radio. Nobody did, really. Not only are space aliens real , but they're hell-bent on killing us all? But then more radio reports were coming in and even some photographs in the newspapers, and that's when I wrote Ma and told her that I might be getting sent up.

Oh! I should probably introduce myself. This is me:

2014-10-16_00001.jpg

Sergeant Benjamin Glatt. That's right: Sergeant. I told them to promote somebody else, but Command told me that I was the one who could keep morale highest, so I was the one who got promoted. I still think it was a mistake, but Command makes the decisions, not me.

I was on a training exercise in the field, just outside Montréal, when I got called up. I was the only guy in my unit who didn't volunteer, but my CO had recommended me--again, he said there was something special about me that "the effort" could make good use of.

I got sent out to Northern Africa, along with 49 other people who'd been variously selected or volunteered for the Corps. "Earth's very finest," they called us. We trained for just over a month, where Command told us all they knew about the enemy, which wasn't much. There was an 80% washout rate for that month: family deaths, training "injuries", and other problems. The last ten of us were told we were "the best and last hope of our world." No pressure.

After that, it was two more weeks of intense training to get us "field ready". I got real close with the rest of the unit over those two weeks. Especially these two: Chris England, and Anna Rogers.

2014-10-16_00002.jpg

Chris is my bunkmate. We call him "Lefty" because he would call the junior COs "leftenant".

2014-10-16_00003.jpg

Anna was the only woman to make it through basic with us. We called her "Big Sis"; she was older than most of us and despite trying to be a jar-head type, she couldn't help but look out for us. She...

We had only been out of training four days when we made our first two contacts. Command sent out the birds to bring them down. We lost one, but luckily one pilot was able to down an ET over Burkina Faso. We were wheels-up just after and started our first bona fide ground engagement with Al a few hours later.

2014-10-16_00006.jpg

We landed at the back of an oil refinery and all filed out of the Charlie. We got visual on our first two Als--Caesans--in short order. Our sniper took the first one out no problem.

2014-10-16_00008.jpg

2014-10-16_00009.jpg

Al #2 took a powder when he heard his buddy cry out.

2014-10-16_00010.jpg

We started our sweep after that. I stopped to check on the one we got: he was almost human. Real frail-lookin'. Almost felt sorry for Al.

2014-10-16_00011.jpg

2014-10-16_00012.jpg

2014-10-16_00013.jpg

Otherwise, it wasn't too eventful; Al was hiding from us. We thought it was a good sign: Al gets spooked too.

2014-10-16_00017.jpg

2014-10-16_00018.jpg

We found the Al who took a powder and executed that bastard.

2014-10-16_00019.jpg

That's when it went to Hell. It wasn't a big deal in the grand scheme--only one of us got tagged--but Big Sis took the hit and she was gone.

2014-10-16_00020.jpg

I screamed and shot the Al who got her in the back of the head. A squad mate hit the other one who was hiding in the storage shacks.

2014-10-16_00021.jpg

2014-10-16_00022.jpg

We formed up outside their craft and breached.

2014-10-16_00023.jpg

Al almost looked pathetic, cowering in the corner in his little box. I didn't care; they killed Anna, so I took out those last two bastards with extreme prejudice.

2014-10-16_00024.jpg

She was the first, but she wouldn't be the last...

2014-10-16_00026.jpg

When we got back to base we didn't even have time to mourn Anna; we had regained contact with the ship that got away, and our Condors took it out. Just like that, we were off on another mission right on the Cape of Good Hope...

2014-10-16_00027.jpg

... in the middle of the night. I sure hope this doesn't bite our asses.

Night time. It could have gone worse. A lot worse.

2014-10-17_00002.jpg

I was first out of the Charlie. We had touched down in the middle of a forest, and visibility was low.

2014-10-17_00003.jpg

Lefty led the charge out the side. The forest was a little thicker than we first imagined.

2014-10-17_00004.jpg

We formed up and tried to keep an eye on things as best we could. There were a lot of trees, but no sign of any ETs.

2014-10-17_00005.jpg

2014-10-17_00032.jpg

The boys were a bit... concerned... about going into the forest, so Lefty manned up and went in first again.

2014-10-17_00008.jpg

And, emboldened by the sight of not much, the rest of them moved up, too.

It was dark, we were tired and we'd already lost one of our own in the day time. Tensions were high as we continued our sweep, but there wasn't much going on.

Gene--Eugene, our squad's sniper--Sergey and I moved up, trying to stick to cover.

2014-10-17_00010.jpg

Jim wasn't so smart and got tagged by something we couldn't see in the trees. For all the flares we tossed it didn't do us much good thanks to the thick forest.

Jim was fine, but something else took a pot-shot at him and he spooked. Dropped his gun and ran.

2014-10-17_00011.jpg

I moved in and saw the Al who was taking shots at us...

2014-10-17_00012.jpg

... and cleaned him up.

The thing about forests, though, is that there are a lot of things to hide behind. I moved up just a bit and...

2014-10-17_00013.jpg

... ran into another Al. He didn't stand a chance.

For as quiet as it had been up until then, it sure didn't stay quiet.

2014-10-17_00014.jpg

This Al managed to get a flank on us and tagged Ervin but good.

2014-10-17_00016.jpg

Gene had said he was worried the trees would make it hard to get off a shot, but he carved one into his stock all the same.

2014-10-17_00017.jpg

Sergey moved in and patched Ervin up. On the way home, Serge said it was pretty easy to patch up, since Al's shot had done most of the cauterizing anyway. Once Erv was patched up, Serge told him to head back to the Charlie, just in case.

Unfortunately, Jim heard Erv get shot...

2014-10-17_00019.jpg

... and high-tailed back to the Charlie as well.

2014-10-17_00020.jpg

2014-10-17_00020.jpg

We moved in deeper and managed to find Al's little ship again.

2014-10-17_00024.jpg

Norwyn took point here while I got into position. Thank God he did.

2014-10-17_00025.jpg

I set up next to the door, ready to breach. Al musta heard me, though, because he came charging out. Norwyn's quick trigger-finger is the only thing that saved me that night.

2014-10-17_00026.jpg

He got a promotion out of it. So did I, as well as Command recognizing me for taking out a handful of ETs. I know five is a tiny number in this huge war, but just knowing Command is recognizing our efforts gives me a little more hope for the future.

We were lucky, too. We didn't lose anybody that night...

2014-10-17_00028.jpg

It just made the loss of Anna sting a little bit more.

After all that excitement in one day, though, things quieted down a bit. A couple of the guys mentioned that they thought maybe we had managed to scare Al off a bit, but I knew better.

A few days later, we got a new rookie, Aggie.

2014-10-17_00030.jpg

She's slow as anything, but Command made her our squad scout. I heard later on that it's because she had demo training and knew how to carry the shield.

After that, though, all we did was wait for the next contact.

2014-10-17_00031.jpg

And now, we get to thread participation!

2014-10-17_00032.jpg

Here's the soldiers we have to choose from right now. I've already hired a couple of new soldiers, but I think I'll leave it up to you guys to decide: who should I hire? What should his or her "call" be? And where should we build our next base, when we have the funds?

Also, what do you guys think so far? It's hard to get good snaps on the aliens' turns because everything happens so quickly (I'm using Steam's built in image capturing). I guess I could get screen capture software and use that, but it would eat up my HD space really quick so...

Oh God, I missed a good AAR (After Action Report). Video-LPs are nice but they can never have the role-play of a good old fashioned AAR.

If you use the Xtended Background mod and stumble across an Austrian I would volunteer to be his namesake.

  • 4 weeks later...

That might not have been long, but that was really fun to read, :D

I like stuff like that, Do you plan on continuing this series? I'd read.

as for the next base...maybe a radar base in the north west corner of Indochina? give you a good view of the bulk of the Soviet union, and first response to china, that or south Soviet union, on the play through I have right now I'm role playing a bit myself, so I have a base in both the Soviet Union, and Indochina, the idea was to protect those two regions and Australasia at the same time but...

Australia wimped out on me, ;-;

But yeah, this was really fun, if you continue it, I'll definitely be checking this thread out a lot, C:
