MortuusSum
To the creepy dudes in white lab coats. Don't worry, they're probably scientists. The guy in charge says he has a theoretical degree in physics.

winterwolves
Alien weapons get sold at the end of the mission. They are one of the biggest sources of income. One example gets sent to the scientists when you first find them. While you can use the alien gear, you are way less accurate with it. I only see it as last ditch backup gear. The fact that alien grenades explode as soon as you throw them is cool too. That can be bad if you hit something near to the guy that threw it though. You'll need to do research to get your own (excellent, I have just started using them) plasma weapons.

cgerrr
My thoughts exactly. But it seems lack of funding/time/commitment is a main theme of Xenonauts release (so many things got cut down/impossible to implement because of said reasons/engine limitations). Shame really: so much untapped potential.
Irishguy117
Yes many things got cut for various reasons but the inability to use alien equipment was a deliberate balance choice by the devs from the beginning.

This was a deliberate design choice by the devs, it's even explained in the lore as the weapons being designed in such a way that makes them too awkward to easily used by humans. Woz2
"Easily" Usage wouldn't be a problem. But ammo would be: unless you scav every alien reload you can, you don't have much long-term ammo for the thing. And it's more realistic really, use the alien weapons until they break because you have no clue how to fix them. And they'd be useless for all but close range, as you don't know how to aim the thing and are firing from the hip basically.
