  1. I was wondering why no one mentioned third upcoming x-com-inspired game. I mean UFO 2 Extraterrestrials. First one wasn't that bad and since BMan's tweaks are promised it might be interesting. But Xenonauts looks way more promising to me. In case of it's already been mentioned many times all over the board, sorry)
  2. I can say, I've played quite a lots of them: - X-COM: UD - X-COM: TFTD - X-COM: Apocalypse - UFO: Extraterrestrials (couldn't really get past certain poing despite several tries) - Jagged Alliance 2, 2.5, Wildfire - Silent Storm - Silent Storm: Sentinels - XCOM EU 2012 Games I've tried but couldn't really get into them: - The UFO series with active pause - real-time and SLS don't mix very well. - Fallout Tactics: BoS - as a harcore Fallout fan I was gravely disappointed this not being Fallout 3 and boycotted the game. Tried to play it lately - not that bad, but doesn't have "that something". - UFO: Alien Invasion - played some early build, half of things weren't working. - Some turn based Warhammer 40k game - meh - Hammer&Sickle - RPG based on Silent Storm placed in Cold War theme. So much potential, so poor execution
  3. Haven't heard anything about it for a long time and the webpage seems deserted. Odd for a game supposedly coming out in a month ('Fall 2012'). Too bad, I was planning on using this to make the wait for Xenonauts not so long. http://www.ufo2extraterrestrials.com/
  4. Hi! Many years ago, probably 15 or so. My friend and I tried a lot of game demos. They had a subscription on some kind o PC magazine and each number came bundled with a cd full of game demos and useful apps. Trial of-course =P. That's when we learned about Diablo, Tyrian, Populus and all those good old games. I didn't have a PC back then but I had recently got a Playstation and was really hooked with FFVII. Had never experienced anything like that before. Zelda: A link to the past was the last game that got me hooked but FFVII was so much more. Those were the times when you only got one or two games a year and could play them for ages without getting bored. ----------------------------------------- Well enough with the back story. I remember that one of the demos we tried was almost like FFVII. The fights were turn based a lot like FFVII, with skills and stuff. Your chars used pistols and swords I think and the whole world were sci-fi'ish. The demo was really short but I remember that in the beginning you walked around in a small village and talked with some people. You got a "mission" about some thieves that you should kill or retrieve some stuff from. Later on you were walking down a narrow path beside a river I think. While walking there I think fights popped up like FFVII but I'm not sure. After a while you met some kind of bad gang that you fought and then the demo ended. Last year I thought that it would be nice to know which game it was. So I searched around on google and some forums and found Septerra Core. The graphics were pretty close to the game I remembered so I got relieved that I finally had found it but while looking at a lot of pictures and watching videos I noticed that the fights weren't the same so it couldn't be it. Does anyone have a clue what game this could be? Would be nice to download the demo and remember how you felt back then and maybe buy it if it's good. Though I really doubt it since I have searched gamespot for many years but never found out which game it is. And all the popular RPG's are pretty easy to find since they have a list of similar games at the left. EDIT: Year we played the demo: After 98 - certain Isometric (2D) background - certain Turnbased battles - certain Not able to move your team in battle - certain No worldmap in the demo - pretty certain Some kind of battle menu - pretty certain At least one of your team members had a pistol in the demo - pretty certain Fought humans in one of the first battles in the demo - I think
  5. Has anyone played this yet? What's it like? Should I buy it? https://indiegamestand.com/store/755/ultimate-space-commando/ http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=177153955
  6. This is a Sims thread..............................Nuff said
  7. I'm passing this along because lately the developers are trying to attract more people to be aware of the game/sim, and are having voting rounds (the Body Part Voting Competition Thingy or BPVCT) where you can vote on what sort of new creature body part you want to have in the game, a choice from four each round and you can suggest your own in the main area. Registration is free, no nonsense or anything, it's a fairly grassroots project like xenonauts, and download of the software is free at this early stage in development. This stage in development is part of improving looks of the creatures, among other things, you can subscribe to have the blog update right in your email when changes come along. What this thing is : Heard of Simlife, SimEarth, Spore, or other more obscure life simulators? Thinking along those lines, here is the website's description. "Species: Artificial Life, Real Evolution is a scientifically-accurate natural-selection video game. It allows you to experience evolution first-hand, simulated from the very first principles of evolutionary science: Variation (every creature is uniquely defined by it’s genes), Mutation (child creatures are randomly modified versions of their parents), and Natural Selection (the environment affects every creature in their struggle to survive). With these principles as it’s gameplay mechanics, Species recreates the same unguided pressures that drove the development of all life on earth over the last 4 billion years. Whether you just want to observe, watching and studying as the tree of life constructs itself from a single species, or you want to be an active influence on the development of the species in the game, is up to you. Check it out at : http://www.speciesgame.com/ Direct to the forums about BPVCT : http://speciesgame.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=24

  14. Only 23 hours left! Please check this out, it looks extremely unique. It's already met it's goal, so it will be finished, however there are some really nice stretch goals still left to meet. Here's the link: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1841885340/tangiers-surrealist-stealth
  15. [video=youtube;sGjwzY1ZdOw] http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/5livesstudios/satellite-reign Satellite Reign is a real-time, class-based strategy game. You control a team of four agents, each with distinct and unique abilities, collectively battling for control of a fully simulated, living cyberpunk city. The game world is designed to facilitate emergent gameplay, giving you the tools and freedom to play how you want to play, so you can create strategies and scenarios that not even we had anticipated! Customize your team with the strength to destroy your enemies head-on, or hack into their facilities to manipulate their infrastructure without them ever knowing you were even there. Will you take down your enemies with brute-force? Covert espionage and infiltration? Or will you use propaganda to influence the citizens of the city and overthrow the controlling powers? http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/07/02/satellite-reign-and-syndicates-simulation-legacy/ (Very informative RPS interview) The city is huge and you can move around and tackle objectives however you want to. You won't be spoon-fed one mission after another, you'll be able to use whatever means you can to get to your final goal. Bribe scientists to advance your technologies, and kidnap doctors to augment your agents. Steal money from the banks to fund your war against the corporations, and exploit neural implants to bend the will of others. Or, try to take your objectives through good old-fashioned brute-force.
  16. The Hulk has come once more. Shall we rise up to claim it? [video=youtube;JUYPV8jBuqM] Though, $30 seems a tad...overpriced... Release Date: August 15th
  17. After an unsuccessful attempt to start this discussion in another thread, here it is, to avoid confusion. Which are the best games you have played the last 5 years? Note that this does not mean that the game has to be released in the last 5 years. Only to have played it. Here is my list: X-COM: EU + TFTD Fallout 2 + 3 + NV Gothic 3 Heroes of Might and Magic IV + VI Civilization IV + V Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction Dragon Age: Origins Elder Scrolls III+IV+V(Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim) Two Worlds The Witcher: Enchanted Edition Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic 2 Sid Meier's Pirates Age of Wonders I+II LotR: The battle for Middle Earth(The first in the series. I did not like the others) Total War: Medieval II + Rome UFO: Aftermath + Aftershock Company of heroes + Opposing fronts Command and Conquer: Generals Build a Lot 5: Elizabethan era Fantasy General Panzer General Stonekeep(yeap I played it the last 5 years!!Long live DosBox!!) Anvil Of Dawn Theme Hospital X-COM2012(not as a worthy X-COM remake, Just as a standalone game) Hmmm. I think this must be all(the best of them ). So, what is your list?
  18. To put it simply I want to know during which time frame did you enjoy playing video games the most. It is going to be broken down like this 1980-1992 The era of text games, simple games. With a few gems sprinkled in here and there. Build mainly either all on story or game play. In My opinion I would call this the Silver Age of games (but like I said it had some hidden gems) 1993- 2004 The era of 2D and isomorphic graphics, games suplemented limited graphics with stronger stories, this was the hay day of adventure games, the beginning of the RPG and FPS, the rise of Sid Meir, The conquering of the world by Microsoft. Also seeing the rise and decline of the PC platform as the premier gameing platform. This in my opinon is the Golden Age of Video games, the right level of narriative with the leave it to imagination graphics. (Well except for that detour with Video adventure games ya know the one with movie clips) 2005-2012 The era of 3D games, when FPS became the dominent game genre, game length shortened as graphics took up valuable space. Grinding in RPGs was replaced with side quest(well except for WOW, but that came from 04) Studios were hit and miss on balancing graphics with good story. Consoles took there place as the main stream popular gameing device. ( I would call this the copper age) and the 4th option is 1980-2012, You enjoyed it all equally. Now to be honest, I would say almost every game is linear is some fasion. You have a storyline, or some end goal point to achieve, and the in between can be short, just simple hallways, or wide open full of side quest(or grinding). I have played very few games with no particular goal or storyline in mind, one of the few being Mount & Blade. I also believe that game play has constantly improved I love my old games from the 90's and early 00's but I can agree that a lot of newer games have better game play (with some exceptions). The problem I think some of us older games have is that some of the games we loved playing have either pretty much died like tactical strategy games(X-Com, Jagged Alliance, while RT I would include Close Combat here) Well until today apparantly or been absorbed, Adventure games basically becoming apart of RPGs. The big difference between the 2 before they merged In RPG's you got quest, went and killed, collected XP, and repeat the cycle. In Adventure Games You maybe had an idea on your Quest/story, completed puzzles, repeat the cycle. Then they merged and you have multiple quest, and puzzles. I'm rambling but I am going to say the 93-04 selection because I have played almost no games from the 80's due to my age. But I can see good points in all of them but I loved that era. Pick yours and tell us why you like one era and maybe hate another one. EDIT: I some how accidently turned off the poll, right before I submitted for the post. So just say the era and why, and I'll try to keep a running total at the top here. 1980-1992: 0 1993-2004: 10 2005-2012: 0 1980-2012: 0
  19. Hi does anybody know if anyone might be thinking of redoing syndicate the old amiga turn based game? Or syndicate wars the old ps1 game. I know i would buy that game..

  21. gnarly

    Undead Hunt!

Still avoiding Xenonauts until its ready to play? Looking for a (free) real time tactical hybrid squad based game?? Haven't spent long on it yet, but really enjoying this little gem on Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.redBeardSoft.gameEngine_final Can't comment on its longevity yet.. 22. Have you guys seen X@Com, the ASCII-based X-Com game? It's actually quite impressive, as far as visual flare (ironically enough). The interface animations alone are pretty impressive, and they do a surprising job of creating atmospheric/pyro effects with their limited graphic engine (ASCII!). I guess that the Xenonaut engine pretty much has static text display, but if not, I'd love to see some sort of animation treatment like seen in X@Com.
  23. I just found that Silent Storm and Silent Storm Sentinals are packaged together as a gold edition and dirt cheap on gog.com. These are some great games in the TBT genre. They are pretty dated but still well worth the money to play around with between releases. I am still having a hard time playing Xeno more than a few missions at a time due to the AI, but I am betting when it is all complete you won't be able to pry me away. So, just wanted to share my find.
