  1. Over on the "How to post bugs" thread, Chris posted as an example... "ie, "[V7.5 - Ground Combat] Aliens have infinite health!"" Combining that with the new test map that was billed as more of a search mission... and you have... Sebillian Predator! 1 alien on the map. larger than normal health/APs Sebillians are already aggressive, close combat creatures so that's OK Tactics to be determined by the AI that's being worked on... A little back story flourish of these guys being genetically modified/ chemically enhanced experimental critters. ...and there you are. A Predator style mission designed to sow fear into a funding nation. Added dev points for making them available in the hot summer seasons of funding nations. Obvious really...
  2. A follow up to the Xenonauts action figure thread... I've been tripping across this lot for a while now, shopping for Christmas presents and think of this game. Clearly, it's something that could be used as a merchandising cross over for a Terror From the Deep re-imagining. You don't have to do everything yourself. Enter:- XENONAUTS2: THE OCTONAUTS The troops, each visually distinctive with a variety of alien killing abilities... Your new underwater HQ... They don't seem to fight much, obviously the war is in it's early days. But here's a vampire squid.
  3. In the Cold War... no one cares if you scream. With X-Com2012 out there and at least a little while before Xenonauts is ready to go, why not look to entice yet another set of games fans towards the game? Aliens Colonial Marines is out in Feb 2013. Now who remembers this, from the Kickstarter goals:- Reaper (Chryssalid) Hive tileset ($40k) – in addition to the normal alien base missions, we will add Reaper (the Xenonaut equivalent of Chryssalids) Hive missions to the late-game. These would feature “nodes” that spawned infinite numbers of Reapers until destroyed. Yes, I have been playing Space Hulk. To get you in the mood, here's a flash game based on Leading Edge's rather brilliant board game of some years ago. Xenonauts would be onto something pretty good to recreate that sort of tension for such missions. Aliens Flash Game Naturally, Corporal Hicks will want a nuke 'em from orbit option in there
  4. Terror mission: The aliens are confident, we're dealing with trained commandos, overwhelming orgazational and technological superiority. Goal to cause as much havoc as possible. Pre-arrival, enemy troops would fan out individually, seek high spots for better fields of fire and less grouping. Post-arrival, depending on rank in charge, they could either see the Xenonauts as civvies to be slaughtered and persist in single-unit tactics until the kill count starts to climb, morale drops, and they begin to regroup and find somewhere defensible. If the commander is higher ranking, instead of waiting for the cannon fodder to start going down, their units could start to regroup quickly (first couple turns) and attempt to establish sniper perches and flanking positions. This gives the player an excuse to USE those rockets they've been saving. Landed UFO: The aliens are there for a reason, present in nominal quantities, and organized. There would be a perimeter around the UFO itself and fire support elements with the scouts, to protect them while they pick wild flowers, romance cattle, or whatever it is they're doing. Post-arrival, the scouts would fall back toward the perimeter and the advance guard would attempt to advance, suppress, and neutralize. As the kill count starts to climb there would be a retreat (organized, if the highest-ranking officer can override the morale of aliens for longer, blind panic otherwise) back toward the defended perimeter. This might start to tie into an idea where if the aliens have uncontested access to the ship or engine room for X turns, they can take off again. You left an interceptor on combat-air-patrol when you landed the skyranger, right? Crashed UFO: Depends on the highest-ranked officer whether they have enough presence of mind to establish a defensive perimeter (higher ranks = smarter positioning, higher terrain, covering fire, etc) and work to get the craft mobile again (landed turns x 1.5 to compensate for damage) or just all pull back to the engine room, hoping to get it airborne before the scary soldiers arrive, or (for very low-ranking officers, early-game) just run around randomly and shoot if they think they have a chance, but try to get away from their ship because it'll draw fire and they want to live. I like the idea of the local strategic situation changing depending on who's there and for what, and depending how savvy your commanding counterpart is. Especially for that feeling when a sniper and a rocketeer take out the highest ranking alien behind enemy lines and their whole strategy starts falling apart. No, it's not fair, because they can't take you out--unless Chris lets us have avatars--but the point is to progress, not be stymied in one map for six hours because Sectoid Rommel over there read all our books.
  5. Probably one that was to be tweaked in Beta, but are there any thoughts around making each of the races a little more or less vulnerable to certain types of damage. Back in EU, certain damage types would provide a little bonus when used against certain foes. It added a slight edge to keeping your weapon options versatile. As it currently stands, all alien armour (within each race and rank) has the same level of resistance to Kinetic, Energy, Chemical and Incendiary i.e. your Caesian non combatant has the same values for each of the four damage types provided. For example, would Incendiary ammo be more effective against Sebilians as it cauterises the wounds preventing their rapid healing ability? To balance this, perhaps they should have slightly higher resistance to Kinetic attacks, representing their tough scaly hides (more than is currently given)
  6. When aliens are located in a room of their alienship, skull aliens, they tend to keep standing there. Don't move. The only way I can think of to kill them safely is throwing grandes into the room. But you have to guess if there are aliens inside. Because their weapon is too strong to head in. If they hit you, your character is dead right away!
  7. I may be remembering this wrong, but in the original XCom didn't researching particular aliens then give your troops a slight advantage on the battlefield? You knew some of their weak spots and could take advantage of them, and that was reflected in better stats? Is that planned to happen in Xenonauts too? Even if it wasn't in the original XCom, does it seem like a good idea - a way of showing you are making some progress in fighting the alien menace better?
  8. one of the things that bothered me with X-COM was the fact that there were no time constraints on most to all missions, meaning I had all the time in the world to set up a perimeter and proceed to slowly clear the map with Spotter/Sniper teams with little individual risk to my soldiers (up until Psychic enemies, anyhow) with the aliens passively waiting to be picked off one by one. I guess a case could be made for terror missions breaking this norm, but in reality this was moot as the majority of civilians were killed within the first few turns anyhow and weren't worth exposing team members to danger. Will there be new features that promotes urgency in Xenonauts, such as the Aliens actively trying to escape the map, blow up their core to prevent recovery or actively counterattack the team (or dropship)?
  9. "Hudson: Is this gonna be a standup fight, sir, or another bughunt? Gorman: All we know is that there's still no contact with the colony, and that a xenomorph may be involved. Frost: Excuse me sir, a-a what? Gorman: A xenomorph. Hicks: It's a bughunt. " "[pulling out his pump-action shotgun] Hicks: I like to keep this handy... for close encounters. Frost: I heard *that.* " "Gorman: Hicks, meet me at the south lock. We're coming in. Hicks: Roger. Hudson: [to Vasquez] He's comin' in. I feel safer already. " lol "Ripley: Well, somebody's gonna have to go out there. Take a portable terminal, go out there and patch in manually. Hudson: Oh yeah, sure! With those things runnin' around? You can count me out. Hicks: Yeah I guess we can just count you out of everything, Hudson. Bishop: [speaking under Hicks] I'll go. Hudson: That's right, man. Bishop: I'll go. Hudson: Hey, why don't you go, man! Bishop: [more loudly] I'll go. Ripley: What? Bishop: I'll go. I mean, I'm the only one qualified to remote-pilot the ship anyway. Hudson: Yeah right, man, Bishop should go. [Vasquez looks at Hudson with disgust] Hudson: Good idea! Bishop: Believe me, I'd prefer not to. I may be synthetic, but I'm not stupid. " lolz "Ripley: They cut the power. Hudson: What do you mean, "*They* cut the power"? How could they cut the power, man? They're animals! " LOL "Hicks: I wanna introduce you to a personal friend of mine. This is an M41A pulse rifle. Ten millimeter with over-and-under thirty millimeter pump action grenade launcher. " "Vasquez: [after barely surviving the Alien surprise attack] Okay. We have several canisters of CM-20. I say we go back in there and nerve gas the whole fuckin' nest. Hicks: It's worth the try, but we don't know if that's gonna affect them. Hudson: Let's just bug out and call it even, mat! What are we even talking about this for? Ripley: I say we take off and nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure. Hudson: Fuckin' A! Burke: Hold on a second. This installation has a substantial dollar value attached to it. Ripley: They can *bill* me. lol;) Burke: Okay, I know this is an emotional moment for all of us. I know that. But let's not make snap judgments, please. This is clearly an important species we're dealing with and I don't think that you or I, or *anybody*, has the right to arbitrarily exterminate them. Ripley: Wrong. Vasquez: Yeah, watch us. Hudson: Maybe you haven't been keeping up on current events, but we just got our asses kicked, pal! Burke: Look. I'm not blind to what is going on, but I cannot authorize that kind of action. I'm sorry. Ripley: Well, *I* believe that Corporal *Hicks* has authority here. Burke: *Corporal* Hicks has...? Ripley: This operation is under military jurisdiction and Hicks is next in the chain of command. Am I right, Corporal? Hicks: Yeah... yeah, that's right. Burke: Yeah... look, Ripley, this is a multi-million dollar installation. He can't make that kind of decision. He's just a grunt! Burke: [to Hicks] Uh, no offense. Hicks: None taken. "
