  1. Hi Max,

I totally understand. My life sounds similar to be honest! Don't want to add to your stress.

I am about to try the mod again with a completely fresh install of the game so maybe I will have more luck. The research that seemed to cause the crash was the enhanced ballistics one. If it crashes again I will try and copy and past the crash log here or something.

I wonder if one of the other mods isn't compatible with it as this doesn't sound like a common crash having read through this thread.

Just so you know it did crash again and this is the message I got from Windows 7:

    Problem signature:

I did just notice that when I add the mod using the mod installer (from the downloaded Zip file) I have to quit out of it as it freezes. Once I restart Xenonauts the mod is there and can be activated etc.

Could I try adding it manually do you think?

  2. Hi Max,

  3. Sometimes the RNG can fuck with you and spawn a UFO already landed on your base though. Frankly I just reload when that happens with no guilt whatsoever. Base defense mission in Xenonauts is kinda bad and unfinished anyway.

    I do tend to agree.

I love all the other aspects of the game but not the base defence so much.

It feels like I should have more control over my base - the doors etc. Everything else I encounter in the game I feel like there is a tactical and strategic thought process that I can go through to get around the problem and that if soldiers die it's because I made a mistake etc but not with base defence.

Maybe there could be an initial siege stage where you get to hold the base from the 'walls' as the aliens unload from their ship etc or a bit more intelligence information about the nature and direction and number of attackers. My men always end up too thinly spread and a couple die and the defences are breached.

  4. I made my own empire, and took over most most of the Swadians, but then the Nords and Vaegirs declared war on mr, the Vaegirs haven't done much, but the nords keep running around and wrecking stuff..... maybe i should find a new Marshall....

You've gotten further than me. I usually start again for some reason or other once I'm working for a lord and trying to gain influence and friends etc.

I kind of enjoy the carefree life as a band of noble murderers for hire, and the responsibility of campaigns and kings etc takes it's toll on me.

Have you tried it 'iron man'? - disabling the save/load ability?

  5. StellarRat. How do you tend to defend your bases from alien attack?

How many troops do you station on each one? I find that the base rocket launcher defences don't really stop a landing unless you have at least three, so seem a waste of money... but even if I have eight-ten troops in a secondary base they will have terrible equipment and a decent alien force can defeat them AND they cost so much money to pay just to sit there. Seems a waste also.

And do you tend to just have one central strike team or do you set up a strike team (for dealing with crashed/laded UFOs) in each of your bases?

  6. Im bought this a little while ago, I knew about if for a bit, and its quite awesome, I have only touched vanilla Warband, but im now starting to play the Napoleonic x-pack. Anyone else play this?

I absolutely love mount and blade warband. It's more or less my perfect game. With Xenonauts and that on my harddrive I could happily never leave the house.

I'd give one of the mods that enhance Native Warband a go for sure. Plenty to choose from. Some just add a lot more weapons and a few more tactical options (such as ones based on the Diplomacy mod) and others add a lot to enhance the entire game including graphics (such as Floris) but make it a bit harder too.

Others totally transform the game world but I've not tried those yet.

  7. I'm getting a crash to desktop as soon as the initial research completes.

If I reload and remove the research - and therefore stop it completing - the game continues as normal.

I'm playing V1.59 (not CE) with various mods such as the instant grenade, no hidden turns etc. I have verified files etc. I'm using steam, on windows 7 64-bit using bootcamp on my iMac. Game very stable other than this CTD.

Shame because this mod looks essential if I'm ever to prosper on veteran level. I just find base defence impossible with 'normal weapons'.

Anyone working on a base defence mod to make it better (easier?) by any chance? just too many strong aliens coming at you from too many directions against rubbish troops with rubbish weapons.

Anything I can do to workaround the crash? Or more info I can give you?

  8. I'm downloading every operating system after tiger to do a series of upgrades, Leopard is the first, then snow leopard, its going to be slow work but as long as i can get stuff tested out before 21 days when my ability to get a refund expires i should be ok

Well seems Leopard was a major upgrade that I will have to buy. Slightly frustrating, I'm hoping a friend of mine has it, if not then it looks like its the refund option, pity

It's probably worth doing the upgrade to snow leopard for £14.99 to activate the other updates/upgrades anyway I would say, depending how tight money is etc obviously.

You'll probably find you need the update at some point - Xenonauts or no Xenonauts.

  9. Yes, we'll probably release a compatibility version of V1.59 in the near-ish future.

Yes, the game is considered finished - alien psionics were nerfed in V1.5 and we're not planning to nerf them any further.

Cheers for the news on the compatibility version Chris.

I've now actually set up bootcamp on my imac with an old copy of Windows 7 that I had lying around and it's working like a dream so far... apart from an alien officer killing five of my men with a grenade as we entered our first corvette. Dam him to hell.

Really enjoying the final version of the game.

  10. Yes that's right. On some macs the graphic card/memory seems to slowly get full to bursting and eventually crashed unless the resources are unpacked.

Great - so if I install the unpacked 'compatibility' version from the Humble store (which is V1.56) and then the latest CE edition over the top it should all work? Thanks!

Although are CE and V1.56 actually pretty much the same anyway? I know Chris used a lot of the stuff you guys did over the past year or so.

  11. I am using an iMac and experience glitches/crashes when using V1.59. So I use V1.56 compatibility for iOS from the Humble store, which works OK so far.

I'm now interested in playing the CE version and wondered if there was a compatibility version of it I could use on my Mac because I assume I will experience the same glitches and crashes with the 'non-compatibility' version?

Thanks for the help and for all the hard work.

  12. Although the latest version of the game initially works fine on my iMac and the geoscape all seems to function well to begin with, during battles more and more glitches usually slowly appear with aliens changing sprites and various things vanishing etc until it usually eventually crashes, so I tried the compatibility version through steam but this won't start up on my system for some reason. Any ideas why?

So I got campatibility V1.56 from Humble store, which seems to work OK so far but will there be a compatibility V1.59 available there at some point?

  13. I know gog great site :)

But I bought Master of Orion 1 and 2 many many years ago xD

The emulation is for my Android device, because there is no port of those games to android.

With aDosBox MoO2 runs on Android, but sadly without sound (was not able to get it working... yet...)

    :) It's such a great website isn't it.

    OK, another idea.

Have you tried any Play By Email (used to be know as Play by Mail) games? I find getting my turn results sent to my email acount adds a bit of fun to the day and these games really tax your brain like older strategy computer games used to.

I actually still play a very old but really fun fantasy RPG game called 'Monster Island' (a bit like some of the modern survival games too I guess) where you explore a massive island and uncover it's secrets and battle creatures and other monsters and explore dark places etc. You start the game by arriving on a raft from the mainland with nothing but a bit of driftwood. You can even fart, learn to ride other creatures, learn voodoo, 'love dance' with other monsters and create baby monsters, become a disciple and cast spells etc.

It's one of the best written and most imaginative worlds I've ever come across despite the initial game being programmed as far back as the early 1990s. It was still being updated and added to until around 2007 and it still has quite a few players although a lot less than at its peak. Give it a try and stay open minded and you'll enjoy it once you get going!

You choose between various monster races - ie a furrcat, a viper etc and you arrive shipwrecked and then have to discover and make weapons and armour and can join religions and other monsters in groups etc. It's a slow start but really fun once you get used to the slightly archaic order formats etc.

You can try it for free here and then it's 50p per turn.

And this is the best website about the game:

    http://monster.edwebb.net/BadNews.html

There is also an absolutely fantastic and detailed hand moderated PBM/PBEM game about 18th century politics, conquest and exploration called 'The Glory of Kings'. A new game (10) is due to start in the next couple months actually, although you can join existing games at any time.

You can play a major European leader or even a pirate king etc and the players role play it magnificently. It is rather expensive though because it is so detailed and all done by hand. And you need a little bit of knowledge about the historical period to do well. Personally I enjoy playing it (badly) and learning a bit of history as I go.

  14. Already played most of the RTS games I know ^^

I also like 4x games, but still there is no game that can beat Master of Orion 2 :)

Hmmmm I really should try to use a Dos emulator on my Android tablet with MoO2

I am sure you are already aware but just in case it's passed you by for some reason.... you can get MoO2 and many of the amazing classic strategy and RPG games for a very low price on GOG.com. No need for an emulator etc it will work on any PC and most Macs & Linux too I think.

  15. Bought the game a couple days ago, have played XCom EU2012 but not the old XComs, have played games similar in vein to Xenonauts before, thought to start on Veteran. 3 people dead by the end of the first alien turn. 6 dead by the end of the mission. That about sets the mark for the rest of the game. Nitpick at things such as soldiers shooting each other in the back despite standing next to each other because shooting over another's shoulder is not a thing (unless crouched, of course). Nitpick at how units cannot move through each other. Research tells me alien weapons get weaker with range. Caesan (is that "Kaisen"? "Seezen"? (like Caesar?) shrug) at maximum range takes a shot at soldier. Hits for 5 damage. Aha! No, wait, he just set his rifle to stun, another hit for 30 from the same spot, soldier dead. Deep frustrated breath. Got a car! Alien doesn't like my car. Hits it for 30. Hits it for 40. Dead car. Hang on, I thought it had 100 HP? Where's the rest of the damage come from? Did it take a hit and not tell me? Also something that gets me a lot is no report of damage. Or the camera is staring at some irrelevant part of the map during the alien turn and I'm staring at some building while hearing soldiers taking hits and dying. Soldiers seem incapable of stepping out so when standing on a corner and looking around it, targets they can see around said corner are targets they can't hit because they shoot the wall instead. That's happened more times than I care to count anymore.

    sigh

How does accuracy work? It's like magnets. 15% chance to hit x 3? Hit, hit, hit, alien down. 80% chance to hit? Shot wide. 10% chance to hit? Shot wide. Try again, hit. It's constantly happening and it makes me wonder if I should even be bothering crouching people behind low walls or shrubbery because it seems to make no difference to me or the aliens. If the shot is true, it's gonna hit it's target. If not, well it's gonna hit the dirt, or with my luck, sail over the soldier's shoulder and hit someone else. And the final accuracy rating hasn't yet felt like a true accuracy rating unless it's across open fields with absolutely nothing in the way.

My fourth go at this campaign, having only gotten far enough for wolf armour, is now with the community edition and a delve into the files to give +20 accuracy to starting weapons with +10 aim for each tier after (+50 at MAG), doubled shield HP because those things just melt at the ranges I really need them to stop hits and 360 degree vision because I am not amused by clunky robotic soldiers that can't look over their shoulders at any point in time with doing a full 180. And these edits probably won't even matter, I'll still get completely rekt. Back to the grinder.

    EDIT:

AND HOW DO I REARRANGE THE BLOODY DROPSHIP?! Take everyone out. Assign the snipers first, place them in the dropship where I want them. Okay. Next up, assaults. Aaand, now #1 is Assault and #2 and #4 are Snipers. Okay, so do I just pick them up in the roster and drag them to the slots I want? No.....? Oh it must be from the dropship placement window instead. Nooo........? Shift click?... Nope.. Ctrl? Alt? R-click?... With a full dropship, my snipers move from first and second place to third and 7th. Great, nah, I didn't want organized hotkeys for troops anyway, it's okay game.

    DOUBLE EDIT:

I seem to have missed something in doubling shield HP as double clipsize is not double HP.

You can rearrange the troops on the drop ship before you leave for a mission but it's a little hidden away.

First go to the base tab at the top of the screen where your fighter ships are stored and then there is a button for 'drop ship' (or similar I don't have the gave at work). Just click on this and it will take you to a top-down map of the drop ship where you can drag and drop your troops as desired. Sniper at front and a couple of people on each of the side doors works well for me.

It sounds like you should start a play through with community mod in 'normal' if you've not played the original x-com or Xenonauts before. It's a lot more forgiving (but still difficult). And don't use Iron Man. Allow yourself a few reloads if something seems unfair maybe?

The latest community edition seems to solve most of my line of sight problems and other little annoyances.

A lot of the other things like the 180 degree sight and not being able to move through other troops are because it is a game. Not a simulator etc. It's effectively a modern remake of a very old game that was based on even older board games. It's always going to have some 'quaint' aspects.
