  1. As I previously said, the main problem for the translation are twofold. 1.) Chris has to finish up the texts first, before he can even consider giving them to a professional translator (that is if a professional translation is planned) and he might even have to reformat them, which takes time. 2.) Money. I just looked it up and a professional translator can cost you from 1,00 EUR to 4,00 EUR per 55 characters easily, depending on the difficulty of the text, even if they get an hourly wage, you can expect it to be often upward of 40 EUR, which in the case of Xenonauts will come down with a few thousands EUR to pay. Because of these reasons I believe that a German language version will not be available at release, but rather some time after that. In what form it will materialize is still unclear and for Chris to decide.
  2. You should not expect it, yet, as the games not yet on steam, as soon as it is, though, Chris is probably going to tell all pre-orderers on how to get their steam keys.
  3. Well, I try to be the devil's advocate here. Why should there not be a small amount of antimatter be injected into the plasma? After all the matter/anti-matter annihilation reaction will create a huge amount of energy, which in turn could be used by some unknown physical process to power the creation of a gravitational field that gives the plasma bolt its coherence. An Annihilation reaction means a release of energy not necessarily an exothermic reaction akin to an explosion.
  4. Well, just a an FYI, the plural of Flammenwerfer is Flammenwerfer in German, we actually use an article (or context, but context is overrated in my opinion) in front of it to decide if we want to use singular or plural. Der Flammenwerfer = singular Die Flammenwerfer = plural
  5. Not in my case, no alcoholic beverages or any alcohol, for that matter, for me. Wisdom just means I got burned a long time before you did and if you don't listen to me you're going to get wisdom the painful way, too.
  6. Actually they don't, but I didn't have them in my translation plans anyway. I have the Sebillian Analysis though, which is the only species with an analysis right now and I have the Reaper autopsy, which also has a text.
  7. But they do, an English text. I haven't gotten around doing it in German yet.
  9. You didn't know about UFO? May I ask under what kind of Rock you were living? We even had this series here in Germany, which can be a pretty big rock for a lot of things.
  10. Uhm, Erutan, there is already a thread about it: http://www.goldhawkinteractive.com/forums/showthread.php/4667-BattleIsle-Returneth And, actually, since it seems to mimick the old Battle Isle mechanics pretty well (they might even have a few guys from the original Battle Isle dev team) I guess I will enjoy it on the PC, too. Oh, and I'd need to buy a tablet to play it on tablet, but it is planned for some time in the future.
  11. Update 3 - 23.04.2013 "So, no update yesterday and no new files today, what is up with you, man?" That might be a question that crops up. Well, I was about to post the update yesterday at 11:00pm when I came back from work, but this throbbing headache I had suggested that it would be far better to take an Aspirin and go to bed. I took the advice that my headache gave me. Last week I also haven't been able to do a lot of translation work, for several reasons. I had morning shift last week and in those weeks I'm usually more tired than in late shift weeks, as I go to bed far too late than is good for me. I'm just that what you call a night owl, like to stay up late and sleep in if I can. So, tiredness, is point one. Point two is games. Besides playing a lot of Xenonauts for research into the current progression of research projects (which essentially make up the Xenopedia entries) to keep the translation progression based, I've also been playing a bit of Battlefield 3, where I finally tried out the last DLC/Content updated and some more Rocksmith, to improve on the songs I've been learning to play there, more or less play that is. What are my current goals for this week? I plan to do a first translation for the following entries: Hunter Rocket Turret (no text yet, easy translation ) Alenium Explosives (same thing as Rocket Turret) Stun Weapons Sebilian Analysis Alien Interrogation Alien Alloy Fabrication Laser Weaponary Wolf Ballet....uhm, I meant Battle Armour Pulse Lasers Rapid Fire Lasers Reaper Autopsy Alien Heavy Plasma Rifle Alien Electronics Corsair Interceptor Scimitar Support Tank Electroshock Grenade Depending on how well it goes I might be able to finish all or only part of those entries. I'll also have to find a few or at least one Ceasan that wants to be introduced to either Stun grenades or the Cattle prod. Same with the Reaper. The first one I haven't seen in a while and the latter ones I'd rather not want to have too close to my guys and girls for obvious reasons. Well, anyway, that is my game plan and I should have an updated file up for your consumption and critisim next week.
  12. A lot of the tooltips are still work in progress and many have not been added. So far tooltips are there for most of the guns, but only very few for any equipment or grenades.
  13. Leprachauns are easy to deal with, they like gold, they love it, so just give them the location of Fort Knox and everything should be fine. Have the US forces stationed there deal with them. Alternatively, to remedy your troubles for all time, you could move to Germany, the fairy folk abhore this region and try to steer clear of it every chance they get.
  14. Well, for the sluagh, you know who you should call? Those guys: , they take care of problems with any type of spirit.Cait Sith or Cat Sidhe, well either it's the guy working for Shinra remote controlling a puppet and just playing with you or it's a real one. In the first case you're out of luck and just have to hope he gets bored, in the second case, just put your purse in a fridge and make a fire somewhere close by. Cat Sidhe like warmth and abhore cold. The fear daerg might also leave when he gets bored, but be happy that you don't have any powries or dunters in your house.
  15. There is one thing that can make your day better, thermonuclear fire, because it is clear to me that any other fire is inferior. I know a guy in Russia that can hook you up with a Tsar bomb, over 50 Megatons of blasting goodness and your troubles will just blow away (which tends to happen when someone is vaporized in the center of a nuclear explosion).
  16. Du kannst helfen, einfach die Dateien mal installieren und damit spielen und im Diskussionsthread Anregungen, Kritik oder Fehler mitteilen. Natürlich nur wenn du magst. Selbst kleine Fehlermeldungen können hilfreich sein.
  17. Yeah, German is actually quite complicated if you really think about it. It has rules, stacked upon rules, stacked upon rules, or so it seems. I guess in a way it confirms that bias that Germans are overly correct, overly precise and that we don't leave anything to chance. A language based in bureaucracy. Some things that can be expressed elegantly with a short sentence in English become a convoluted mess or more than one sentence if you want to carry and convey the same meaning in German. We have a proverb here in Germany, which goes like this: "Deutsche Sprache, schwere Sprache", which would translate to "German language, hard language". I think nowadays pupils still dread the German classes in school just as much as we did back when we were still going to school. However, German can be flexible and adaptive at times. It is very accommodating to forgein language terms (e.g. Computer, cool, etc.) if a proper German word can't be found or might be too complicated or just isn't there (yet). More UI space to work with would be nice, if it is not too much effort for you, however, if need be I'll try to find a workaround or a similar term that does not use up that much space. Thank you for you input and explanation on some of the terms, Chris, makes it much easier to find a fitting translation for those words. I, too, hope that the final version of the translation will be of good quality. I certainly know that it won't be as bad as the one they offered up in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. There, in a triple-A game and from a company with money in the millions to work with, they had a translation quality for which the term low quality would be doing it too much honor. Or would you know what the effects of a potion called Schw.Tr.d.Le.En.W. (English = W.po.o.Li.En.R.) would be? Well, most German players didn't know that this potion was supposed to be a Schwacher Trank der Lebensenergiewiederherstellung (English = Weak Potion of Lifeenergyregeneration). And this was only on of many of these abbreviated items in the game. They also had quite a few text not fully translated or translated that it looked like they just used the google translator. So, yeah, we Germans have seen quite a few bad translated games, therefore a lot of people will be very critical about this translation, meaning I have a heavy burden to bear. I just hope I'm worth it.
  18. I already noticed, however, don't worry about it. I just have to copy and paste my translations to other locations in the file and if the structuring inside the file remains similar to what the final version is intended it isn't much of a problem.
  19. Update 14.04.2013 Okay, it is time for the second update. I've been mainly working on translating the first few entries for the Xenopedia this last week. Currently the following entries have a first, basic translation: [*]F-17 Condor [*]CH-48 Charlie [*]MiG-32 Foxtrot [*]Craft Autocannon [*]Sidewinder Missile [*]Avalance Torpedo [*].50cal Machinegun [*]Hunter Armoured Vehicle [*]Jackal Combat Armour [*]Alien Invasion [*]Alien Biology [*]Alien Alloys [*]Alenium [*]Alien Plasma Technology [*]Alien Plasma Pistol [*]Alien Plasma Rifle [*]Caesan Autopsy [*]Sebillian Autopsy Naturally I'll have to stress here, that this is the first and not the final version of the translation. Feedback, however, is still welcome, but remember that mistakes (and possibly quite a lot of them) are present in the texts. Any Feedback should be posted in the Discussions thread (or PM me if you want to keep it quiet), to keep this thread clean and focused on updates. I also had a look over the strings.xml of Version 18 and I tried to copy paste what I had already translated for the 17.91 version, but it turned out to be more time consuming that anticipated, as quite a few entries have switched positions. They all seem to be still there, but they are in the wrong (so to say) places, so adjustment has been slow and is not finished for this update. This means that if you use the strings.xml in the below linked .zip-file, that a lot of the entries will still be in English. Adjustment is underway and I try to finish it by next week. For the time being, however, I've also put in the 17.91 strings.xml, which, as it is just a file for text calls, should still work fine with version 18 for most of the game. I named it stringsDE179.xml, if you'd like to use it, remember to rename it to strings.xml. Please make sure that you read the Liesmich.txt/Readme.txt supplied with the .zip-file, as it contains information on installation and additional subjects. For now I'm using zippyshare to upload the files, as it is a free, fast and easy to use service for sharing of small files. To make sure, I also downloaded the file after the upload and ran a virus check, just to make sure it is a legit service. No viruses/virii/whatever have been found. As a small reminder, if you are using a downloadmanager (l use Free Download Manager) or at least the one I'm using, you may not get a file named Xenotest.zip, but just a file call Null, without any extension. Do not worry, the file has downloaded okay, but apparently zippyshare doesn't like FDM. To remedy this, just rename the file to xenotest.zip and it works as normal from there. Also remeber that, as zippyshare is a free service, the file will not be on their servers indefinitely, it will be deleted after 30 days of inaction, so there might be a time when this file is not available anymore. However, right now this should not be too much of a problem, as I'll be posting frequent weekly updates. When (and if) the translation is finished and Goldhawk approves of it, it might be bundled with the game, which eliminates the need for file sharing services alltogether. Okay, here is the link to the file, checked for working condition and for viruses/virii/whatever, so download and enjoy if you like and post your feedback in the appropriate thread. http://www46.zippyshare.com/v/53254207/file.html
  20. Since I'm in the process of translating the game to German I knew where to look for the strings for this one. Seems like the strings that were there in V17.91 in the strings.xml accidentially got deleted in the V18 strings.xml, which is why it is defaulting to the ####. I did a reinsert of the missing strings from the 17.91 file and it worked again. <Row ss:AutoFitHeight="0"> <Cell><Data ss:Type="String">PER.TrainingDesc</Data></Cell> <Cell ss:StyleID="s86"><Data ss:Type="String">Basic Training will familiarise new recruits with Xenonaut equipment and battlefield doctrine in a safe environment. On completion of this course, a recruit will be promoted to Corporal and will receive the same small skill boost as if he had earned promotion on the battlefield. This course will last ten days and the soldier will be unavailable for deployment during this period.</Data></Cell> </Row> <Row ss:AutoFitHeight="0"> <Cell><Data ss:Type="String">PER.TrainingName</Data></Cell> <Cell ss:StyleID="s86"><Data ss:Type="String">Basic Training</Data></Cell> </Row> Those are the two missing strings. If you want to correct this issue yourself, open you strings.xml with a Text editor (Vim, Notepad, etc.), have it search for PER.TRAINING and just copy and paste the above strings after </Row>. Save, start your game and you'll have the basic training text back again.
  21. I can give you other example, especially concerning ground vehicles, where the Bundeswehr uses German designations: Wiesel 1 + 2, Büffel Bergepanzer, MARS (Mittleres Artilleriereaketensystem), Panzerhaubitze 2000, etc. While your argument about military vehicles holds up mostly fine for air vehicles (exceptions being scout drones like ALADIN, MIKADO, etc.), there certainly is no basis whatsoever for ground vehicles, as all of those that I currently know of have German designation. Because of these reasons a german translation for the ground vehicles definitely makes sense, as it keeps in tradition with naming conventions of the armed forces in Germany. The alien races actually are not too detrimental in my opinion, as there are only 3 or 4 where I do have to do a full translation, but it is necessary as there are some that would either not get the meaning behind it or because they despise English in their localized game (Stichwort Anglizismen). But even then, most translations will be close enough that almost everyone that wants to discuss them in English, should be able to. For now I will do a translation with full german designations for everything, however, after I'm finished I might consider to offer up an alternative translation with designations in English. Even if I were not to do the latter one, however, it would still be easy to go into the files yourself and adjust it to your liking, as you'd only need a text editor with a 'search and replace' function, let it search for the strings and replace it with the designation you prefer. I will do it like this, because I have to make a decision and lock it in, otherwise I would get caught up in changing things around all the time and that would push back a finished translation more and more. I also do realize that my translation (which in all likelyhood might be nothing to write home about anyways) will probably not be to everyones taste, but that is the way it is in real life, you just can't please everybody, but at least in this case the system is flexible enough to handle different translation strains.
  22. According to test that I've run, water is amagnetic. I used a large electromagnet on seawater and it stayed in its vessel, no movement detected whatsoever, so it can't be magnets. I have, however, hypothesized, that the water is sucked up by huge vacuum cleaners and then sprayed on random places on the earth as rain. Small scale tests with an adapted vacuum cleaner seem to confirm this, water is sucked in at one end and expelled at the other as a spray very similar to what we see with rain. So, yeah, magnets keeping the water in check is a huge (possibly alien) conspiracy, don't believe it.
  23. Short and easy tip for screenshots if you use Steam, just add it as Link to Steam and start it through Steam (Games -> Add aNon-Steam game to My Library), that way the Steam overlay will also start with it and you can take screenshots of the game with F12. Concerning the issue, it might be low priority for the dev for now, as we will get a UI overhaul with one of the coming updates.
  24. Concerning the first one, I will and already have used several of those words as they are more or less synonyms and help in keeping the text from becoming boring to read, though I have decided to use Extraterrestrische exclusively in things like the Xenopedia headers. The second one actually is an interesting idea, as the Hunter is based on the Damiler (a british company not owned by Daimler AG of Germany, but connected to it historically) Ferret, which is another animal used as both pet and for hunting and in a similar fashion to the dachshund, to ferret, as it is called, rabbits and such out of their hiding places. Though in that case I'd probably go with Dackel, as this is the name commonly used for the dachshund in German, but I also have to consider the designation Teckel, which is the name given to Dackel used by hunters in actual hunting. Therefore the last one would be the right one to use and I quite like the association of going from a vehicle named after one hunters helper to naming it after another helper and still having a reference to hunting in there. I will still have to do some thinking about it, and I'd also like to hear other opinions, but I'm strongly considering using this, so not a bad idea at all.
  25. I'm not into the arm twisting business, I just rip them out and throw them away. Well, actually, right now it is my brain that is a twisted, mangled, mess right now, all this additional information to process and to adjust to actually writing something and writing it as good as you can (which might still be bad to a lot of people) is somewhat tiring, but as soon as I can increase the stage of or add a new entry in my overview list it feels like quite the accomplishment.
