Researching an alien officer doesn't open up anything new or important in the tech tree other than the need to research an alien leader. So there's no incentive for delving into that ASAP when there are more pressing projects you'll want to get such as plasma tech, mag tech, better armor and better ships. I've been postponing my alien leader research for a few months now with no problems.
