  1. Have you tried to play it recently? I enjoyed it a lot later (actually I'm still enjoying it - just started a game this weekend ) - yes, it did take them quite some time to fix it, but in the end they did get it working (at least in my opinion)
  2. The game I struggled the most with was Dwarf fortress, but all those hours of figuring it out were worth it
  3. This reminds me of a user on a different forum (a very frequent poster) who decided to write all of his replies as haikus I think he managed to write a few hundret if not thousand haikus and he was always understandable. Though he stopped with them after some time.
  4. Turning off autoupdate does not meant don't ever update, but don't update before I actually need it - so you won't eat my bantwidth while I play other games... And yes, steam does not display that, nearly everyone learns it the hard way...
  5. Since suppression from it is very common I personaly do find it useful... Getting them easily supressed sometimes means more than raw damage output IMHO
  6. I really enjoyed CoH (the first one, i have never tried the second) untill I found Men of war.... I simply coudn't go back to CoH after playing it.
  7. About the RPGs you menioned - role play them It is far more interesting, don't think what is the optimal choise; think about what the character you are playing would say in such a situation. And usually most options get evenly rewarding in the end (there can be some exceptions - but you can always finish the game ) EDIT: i also force myself to never reload such games (unless they crash of course or i'm forced by a game over...), what happened, happened and it's part of the story.
  8. If anyone would like to know a bit more how the units work and how the cards in your deck work, there have been a few updates lately describing what is what on the cards (and there has also been a rather interesting lore update)
  9. One of the most underrated tanks in the game - i had tons of fun with it (although not that many battles) If you return to it later when you are more experienced you can do a lot of damage with it (at least it was so before i stopped playing a year ago...) I had (technically still have) the JagdTiger (back in the day it was the highest tier german TD), IS7, IS4, Bat.-Châtillon 25 t , VK 28.01 (highest tier german light back than - also hated on the forum, while it was a GREAT tank, everyone underestimated you and i got 4+ kills in many matches (counter its slow acceleration with starting downhill if possible and surprise your enemies)), Pershing, T32, SU-14, T25/2 and the Tiger (i think the tiger was/is decent if you play him right, i would have definately continued towards the Tiger 2, but stopped playing at the time i grinded the Tiger 1). I also had a few cheaper premium tanks - Pz.Kpfw. 38H 735 (f) , Ram II , T14 The most fun tanks i've ever played (in no particular order): -T14 -T20 -Ferdinand -AMX 13/90 -T29 -M18 Hellcat (play it as a TD which relocates a lot and you can do enourmous damage, all people who used it like a medium/light with a big gun never saaw its true potential) Yes you see it right i was no real fan of the russians, but got the two t10 tanks for clan wars (proud member of STAPA - a pure fun clan, where we enjoyed trying to get at least some victories in CW battles but in the end we always lost (so my t10 stats are really bad, since i've almost never used them outside of CWs))
  10. So the KS campaign didn't work out, but KP hasn't given up - they started an indiegogo capaign for a lower goal. But they also plan less content (appropriate for the lower goal), though the old content will be added as a stretch goal: Campaign link: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/sword-of-the-stars-ground-pounders/x/1677170
  11. With Rome you mean Rome 1? (same question for Medieval and Shogun ) If you mean Rome 1 than that gets my vote, if we are talking about the sequels i guess it would be Shogun
  12. The "needed the money or they would have gone broke" is most likely IMHO (maybe with some pressure by the publsher as well). Arinn Dembo (writer of Kerberos) wrote this on her blog after the release: I'm sure i've read somewhere on the Kerberos forum that Mecron also sai they have lost a big part of the team months before release... EDIT: btw i agree with TrahsMan that the game is good now, at least i've had lots of fun with it (and tbh i can't go back to SotS1 anymore)
  13. Kerberos Productions is currently running a Kickstarter campaign for their new strategy game Ground Pounders. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kerberosproductions/ground-pounders I'll just quote the What is...? from the KS campaign: You can also try out a alpha demo, which seem already really promising IMHO.
  14. I agree with solarius that it is kinda hard to describe it in one forum post The general concept: you give orders what you would like to have done and your idio... ehhh, sorry, dwarfs will try to get the jobs done when they feel like it, of course you can set for each dwarf which kind of jobs he is allowed to do and what he isn't (which is very important, since it is better to dedicate dwarfs into a few jobs since evrything they do has a skill and there is a HUGE difference between a novice and a exeprienced dwarf). The best part of DF are its details and complexity. Solarius already provided the link to the homepage. I would suggest you check out the wiki: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/ And you should get used to this tool (i hope it is updated for the last version of DF, since it is a huge help managing your dwarfs): http://code.google.com/p/dwarftherapist/ (because when your settlement is doing good you'll get immigrants and handling those guys if a big wave comes is the singel most tedious thing in the game and that tool makes it a few second job) EDIT: btw if you can't stand the ASCII look at all you can alsoo google for a DF tileset or graphic set, i actually prefare the normal version, but i know a lot of people who always play with a tileset enabled. One example: http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.php EDIT2: DF also has a RPG gamemode, which can be interesting as well (though i haven't spent that much time with it)... The combat mechanics are great (beside using the weapon dwarfs can kick, grap, bite etc.) - i remember one combat report a frind of mine had send me(i think he had an elven invasion? They certainly had tamed beasts (yes you can tame animals/beasts as well) - elves aren't hostile by default (unless the history generator started a dwarf vs elf war which hasn't ended when you start the game), but you can make them angry by killing their caravans or cutting down to many trees in a short time period). It said roughly this: One of the tamed animals had ripped off an arm of one of his soldiers (of course he started bleeding heavily, but i guess he was in shock and could still fight on for a little bit). The soldier grabbed the beast and bit the animals neck and than ripped off his throat. Than the soldier grabbed an arm of his next enemy and dislocated his shoulder. Sadly than a spearman came and stabbed him in his torso (my friend check the dwarfs status and he was breathing shallow after that (and thanks ot the blood loss he was also alredy quite pale, so he wouldn't have lived longer anyway) so it seems the spear got through his lungs - yes the game keeps track of every possible organ, bone, muscle, joint and/or ligament which can be injured and the injured individual will have the appropriate problems after those injuries, and you dont know exactly what is wrong with him (you can guess from the visible problems) untill a doctor doesn't make a diagnosis - making a working hospital is quite a lot of work in the fortess mode (never forget at least clean water, preferably also make/buy soap, or else your patience will later die from infections) ) EDIT3 (i hope this'll be the last one ) Here is a comic from the wiki which is a great comparison between casual games, hardcore games and DF: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/images/4/40/FunComic.png
  15. Indeed great games I found them when i searched or something similar to Company of heroes (which is great as well, but Men of war is even better IMHO) Other awesome games i've played in the recent years: -Baldurs gate 2 (i can't describe how happy i was when i found out that it works on windows 7 ) . And it is still my favourite RPG (note: i'm not really a fan of Oblivion and Skyrim... They were to shallow for my taste (loved Morrowind though - but i don't thnik i've played it in the last 5 years)) -Diablo 2 -Path of exile (THE D2 successo IMHO - i love nearly everything in this ARPG and on top of that it is free to play (microtransactions giving only cosmetical effects)) -World of tanks; yes it is a "brainless" multiplayer shooter, but it kept me hooked far longer than most other games i've played in my life (and sadly it also costed me more money than any other game ) -Europa universalis 3 -Heart of iron 3 -Victoria 2 -Crusader kings 2 !!! (all last 4 are from Paradox interactive and are all AWESOME grand strategy games) -Magicka (best COOP ever) -Dominions 3 (i'm still getting into this one but i already love it, one of the most complex startegy games i've ever played. I'm currently preparing my strategy for my first MP game) -Mount and blade Warband (both singe and multiplayer really fun) + Mount and blade Napoleonic wars (MP only addon, btu with some great gamemodes) -Minecraft -Portal 2 -Sword of the stars 1 and 2 (the second one needed still quite some time after release, but it is really good now IMHO) EDIT: How could i forget the game to rule them all: -Dwarf fortress
  16. There is at least one pre aplha screenshot But as i said the project seems cancelled
  17. Paradox was working on a project called Cartel, which was supposed to be a syndicate successor, but sadly it is on hold and probably won't ever be finished
  18. I have seen similar issues (aliens and ground forces knowing the exact position of the others and triing to shoot each other over the entire map) no loading involved, sadly i can't provide a savegame, since i wanted to test the game in Iron man mode... I have only met the first type of alien aircraft and all missions where missions where i shot doen the UFO.
  19. Yeah i also get a lot of aliens running wildly around, staying in the open and firing on Civilians/NPC soldiers on the other side of the map (not only is the distance a problem, they also seem to ignore buildigns and other obstacles in the way (they keep shooting in the same direction untill the obstacle gets destroyed and they can finaly try to hit the civilian))
  20. I crashed after a ground combat mission (on the desert tileset with the hanger). No civilians were harmed and the NPC soldier survived as well. None of my men were injured (and i didn't use the shield). The combat was against the reptilian aliens. And i think it was the 3rd ground combat mission i had after starting the game (playing Iron man mode). The only not standard thing during the combat was that the last alien died thanks to reaction fire from my troops. The game showed the after mission screen (and the screen with the soldier promotion info) and crashed after i clicked to return to the geoscape.
  21. In my first ground mission the aliens and NPC soldiers kept destroying a building between them when they tried to shoot at each other. Since i sadly didn't see the building intact i don't know if they had a direct line of sight through windows (the side where the aliens were and the side of the soldier were already destroyed when i saw it), but it seems related to this one (maybe they even tried to shoot each other through solid walls, but as i said, i can't confirm that)
  22. Same problem here. I wanted to attach my DxDiag, but there seems to be a forum problem (the attachment "manager" gives me a 404 page not found). So i'll copy parts of it (the DxDiag) into the spoiler below:
  23. Can't wait for the steam release But take your time, don't rush anything
