  1. Dwarf fortress, Caves of Qud, Prospector and Tales of Maj' Eyal are all roguelikes I've played a bit of, jefmajor also has videos for all of them on his youtube channel, I'm not sure how many of those actually count as 'roguelikes' but they've got the general style of them. Though when it comes to favorites I'm tied between Dwarf fortress and Caves of Qud, though CoQ feels more feature complete to me even though its nowhere near finished because its got a set story and it makes me feel like I'm actually doing something, while still keeping the random 'you can die whenever' feel of most roguelikes. The character creation is rather diverse in CoQ as well, I once made a 4 legged albino mutant with focus on the mental ability that creates fire explosions and dubbed him Colonel Mustang.
  2. Jefmajor is my favorite but a couple of other fairly popular let's players that I tend to frequently watch are PlumpHelmetPunk and Kikoskia, though I'm not sure if they're open to suggestions or not. (edit: just realized they were already suggested, but hey, I'll suggest them again for no particular reason besides the fact that it somehow seems like less effort to edit my post than to delete it)
  3. As I have no life whatsoever I am able to inform you all that the new dwarf fortress content update has released within the last couple hours, feature list available on the site,so be sure to post the funny bugs we're all sure to encounter for this release.
  4. I played through the demo just now and was impressed with the difficulty, but not much else, the combat was tense and all, but was very buggy. If you got within 2-7 feet of anyone your people would suddenly not have a shot on anything and just point their guns at the enemy waiting to get their heads blown off, Which made rushing buildings that npcs hole up in a huge annoyance if you aren't the kind to save after every skirmish, and the random grunts in the mission have faster reaction time than your 'Elite team of mercenaries'. The tutorial was 80% useless and didn't prepare you for the real time combat at all, and to my knowledge didn't once mention the most useful feature of the game: Guard mode, in case I, you know don't want to pause every 5 seconds and que up headshots on the 12 soldiers that are bum rushing through my bullets and puling off perfect headshots on my guys while getting hit in the face with bullets that somehow only blow away half of their health. I did have fun with it when everything worked right though. So my opinions at this point are terribly mixed, I'll probably watch a let's play for the full game and see how well all the features of the game work before I decide if I want to buy it or not. Edit: I also found a grenade launcher that fired missiles in one of the chests, and proceeded to omgwtfbbq.
  5. Yeah I was planning to make a necromancer with a small undead army, retire him in a memorably named place, and then see how many adventurers I could waste trying to take him down. The catch of course being if I invest alot of time into making a great adventurer to take him down that he's just going to be turned into a zombie to thwart me in the future. Or maybe I'll gather a group of epic adventurers and then get a necromancer and make them all my zombie slaves, whatever works I guess.
  6. My long running fortress called "The Brewing of Angelic Anus-Apples" was destroyed today by a tantrum spiral followed by an attack from a small army of troglodytes from the caves beneath my fort, 6 consecutive goblin ambushes and a goblin siege within the same half hour. The final dwarf by the name of Fet "BrushedWhips" Emener the engraver, was struck down by a penguin man, who I had released from my arena after the military died in the hopes that it would kill a few goblins, it did not. Looking forward to the new release though, supposed to be out within the next couple of weeks, so I've been keeping an eye on the site. Anyone got any plans for the new release?
  7. The most recent one I played that I could think of was Kerbal Space Program, a currently in-development space flight simulator, missing a large portion of the planned final features but its playable, and has a pretty boss fan trailer: I have to say that I haven't played very many games in the genre though, The number of games I've played that even take place in space is rather limited, Rogue Squadron, Wing Commander 3 and X-com Interceptor all come to mind. I'll need to keep an eye on this thread and try out the good looking recommendations.
  8. I quite literally shouted what the F***?! in my living room an hour ago with my family present when I saw an advertisement on television for SOPA and PIPA that basically said that the internet was evil and that the bills were going to save america's jobs and fix all our countries problems in general, oh and that all of the other countries steal all of america's ideas from the internet. Just ya know, Ignore the fact that the world half united in utter hate of the bills a couple days ago and support them. That was the jist of the commercial anyway. Right now I'm trying to decide if I should be laughing that the bills are dead anyway or be very angry that they would go so far as to insult people's intelligence by claiming that the bills come together to make the holy grail that will help save america from economic disaster.
  9. I remember watching the live coverage of the SOPA hearing and being in awe of how ignorant(perhaps willingly so) the supporters were of how harmful the bill is. after worrying about this for months I'm liking the amount of attention this is getting the bills. The bills will leave many people without jobs because of a stack of papers and a collection of butthurt big-name corporations, and the last thing we need is more people pissed at our government AND more people that need jobs. We need to learn to say no to this, and be prepared against such legislation in the future.
  10. 20 seconds into that video and the guy has already put a rape face on, I'm afraid to screenshot it and still listen to the soundtrack the same way.
  11. It's possible that the satellite will auto scan for aliens, but that you yourself can scan area's outside of a satellite's normal scanning range.
  12. Now that I think about it, He IS very much reflecting what they want our reaction of the announcement to be "OH MAH GEWDNESS we've been betrayed, HERE LETS BUY THIS OTHER GAME" and even though he does seem slightly skeptical, I didn't hear about any of the possibly game-changing stuff I've heard here anywhere in his video. but it's possible he's just praising this on the fly like he did with SOTS2:LOW. Which as we all should know ended in epic face-palming all around.
  13. Angry joe finally got his hands on it(top comment on the youtube video is about xenonauts right now), He seems completely overjoyed, even going so far as to break into dance: (beware, profanity inbound) While I don't have anywhere near that much enthusiasm, it's nice to see someone so hopeful that it will be what we expected from the other x-com.
  14. I just recently picked up a rogue-like that jefmajor started doing a let's play on(for some reason I find out about rogue-likes from him) called: Tales of Maj'Eyal 'aka' ToME 4: http://te4.org/tome It's super simplified and easier on the eyes compared to the ASCII style rogue-likes I usually play, and there seems to be a very expansive number of unlocks like new classes, races, and campaigns that you can get by just doing certain achievements in the game. Edit: now that I think about I'm not entirely sure if rogue-likes count as 'Retro' games so sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place.
  15. I'd be willing to overlook the somewhat generic look of the x-com operatives, but all the actual aliens I've seen in both the shooter and this new game both seem stylized to the point where they actually look less threatening than the little gray space midgets I had to learn to fear. The other aliens are gonna just have to blow me away(literally and metaphorically speaking) for me to learn to fear and respect these aliens like I did the originals. I'm also worried all this 'streamlining' will strip the difficulty away just to make it easy on the people too impatient to actually sit down and master new gameplay mechanics. Despite my complaints though the game look's perfectly playable, but it just doesn't feel like x-com to me yet. They're moving in the right direction compared to the shooter though that's for sure.
