The combat experiences are all historical wars from the 60's and 70's that a soldier's nation was involved in but you will get the occasional non-historical result due to there being no relationship between a soldier's age and previous combat experience when they are generated. e.g you might get a 21 year old veteran of Vietnam.

I've included 2 extra files called regiments.xml and experience.xml which are the slices of strings.xml that this mod uses. What this enables you to do is copy and paste over the regiments and experiences that are in any version of strings.xml and let you use this mod with any other mod.It will also allow you to update the mod yourself if you wish :)

This was developed for V22 but should work fine for the V21 stable.

Nice, I'll have to give this a try sometime...although "Special Forces" is not an actual regiment. Nor was I aware the Russians ever fought in Vietnam?

Also at some point we'll have to work out the character limit for the first and last names, because some of the eastern european ones can be very long and they go off the edge of the screen.

Thanks. :) Special Forces is actuallly the official name of the Green Berets. Where a service has a lot of regiments, I went for the overall title of it, such as: Spetznaz, Airborne, etc. As for Soviets fighting in Vietnam, it's never been confirmed but there are a lot of rumors of "advisors" serving there, the Aussie SAS reported seeing an armed, well-built caucasian, preparing with VC troops for example, so I decided to include it for some flavour.

  • 2 weeks later...

By the way, are African countries-of-origin planned? Or are there even already any? They had a lot of strife going on down there (unfortunately still have to this day), which would make for some combat experienced troops from say Rhodesia, South-West Africa or South Africa (which have the advantage of being able to use white portraits, as I believe there aren't that many black soldiers at the moment) or other now differently named African countries such as Zaire and Upper Volta. I think it would add a nice amount of historical flavour, making you party like it's all 1979 again ;) and it would alleviate the general tendency of video games to focus on the Western world (and maybe the Soviet Union, depending on the era a game is set in). Drawback would be to generate believable names, especially for black Africans.

My line of thinking is that Xenonauts is mainly a Nato / Warsaw Pact organisation with Aus / NZ being strong allies of Nato so I added them. (Actually with this train of thought, maybe I could add Vietnamese and Cubans as they were strong allies of the Soviets) I thought about adding Rhodesia and South Africa but Rhodesia was an unrecognised state that had been turned into Zimbabwe by 1979 and South Africa was a pariah state by then due to it's apartheid policies so I'm not sure how they'd fit in.

I understand that. It just came to my mind that African countries could provide combat experienced soldiers, whereas the "big players" often cannot (because of all the proxy wars). Plus, it'd get some additional flavour into the game. I'd be very interested to hear what Chris has to say about that, though (of course it is only a mod, but it'd be interesting nonetheless, especially regarding the somewhat alternative Cold War timeline). Rhodesia turned into Zimbabwe Rhodesia only in the summer of 1979, so at the beginning of Xenonauts we could still have them in. You're right, however, about the somewhat unofficial or outcast nature of those states.

Good to hear you were at least considering this :) As another suggestion, what about Japan? Do we already have them? They featured in the original X-COM, though that was set in another time, and I don't know about the combat potential of Japan's force as they were primarily a homeguard sort of army. Another idea I had yesterday was Portuguese soldiers, who fought in Africa up until 1975.

Oh, and +1 for Cuba and Vietnam :)

I was humming and haaa-ing about adding the Portuguese but you're right, they were pretty experienced troops back then. Another thought was completing the NATO nations, adding Norwegians, Danish,Dutch,Greeks,Italians,Turks,Spanish and possibly the French. And also rounding out the Warsaw Pact nations (Polish, Bulgarian, and Romanians).I'm not sure when I would get this done though as I have baby no. 3 due any day now so my already limited spare time is going to be even more limited. :D

Hopefully Chris will update the xenonauts font soon to allow accented characters so it will be a LOT easier to copy and paste name lists :D

Well, for the next version which I'm going to release when 9.2 comes out, I've added the Danish, Dutch, Norwegians, Italians and Portuguese.I'll probably get a couple more nations done before release.

You want some Icelanders eh? Will they have Iceland incident experience? (btw does any Russian or Americans have iceland incident experience?)

Didn't all the troops involved in the fighting die?

Yay, great! Rounding out the NATO is a good idea. By the way, good luck to your and especially your wife (or girlfriend), I hope everything goes fine :)

Cheers mate :) Today is the due date but still no baby. At least I've got more countries done :D. I've now added the Spanish, Cubans, Vietnamese, Polish, Romanians and Bulgarians. I'll see if I can add the Turks, Greeks and French by the end of the week. Then I'll test each nation separately to see if I've missed any special characters and it'll be good to go.

Thanks for the well wishes, guys. :)

My daughter came more than 6 weeks too early, so that was a problem. So rather a little late, than too early.

Good luck to all of you!

I know where your coming from, our firstborn was 4 weeks early, she had to be induced as the missus got pre-eclampsia.She only weighed 2.1 kg(4 lb 10oz) so definitely needed more time in the oven. :)
