Albert Kowaletz
Less of a bug, more of a missing feature that feels striking. I sent a dropship to a distant crash site and gave it company from a Condor after reading the helptext about it being unarmed and requiring protection when enemy craft are nearby. Condor ran out of fuel and the group returned despite the Charlie's massive range. I would love to just send the Condor back to base and have the Charlie continue its tiny way to the site (~7000 km) instead of waiting for both to return to base (13200 km) and then sending the dropship the entire way again (33000 km). That would be several days, I'm afraid the crew might have starved when reaching the site. I mean, I've learned my lesson never to put the Charlie in a squadron again before this gets fixed but it would be great to break formation there. It would be similarly useful to split up a squadron of Condors if multiple UFOs show up in the vicinity or to have a faster craft break loose and hunt down a UFO when it tries to speed away. And then, maybe, merge again. Providing some flexibility. If you have already implemented this in later version which I don't have or if there is a separate Feature Requests forum, tell me. Regards. Gauddlike
It has been suggested a few times but never added. It is a complicated fix apparently due to the way squadrons are coded and the devs didn't feel the time it would require would be justified by the benefits to gameplay. Albert Kowaletz
Good to know. Thanks, Gauddlike. Maybe a message warning the player that the craft will never reach the intended destination upon scrambling the jets would do the job as well. Gauddlike
Something like that would be quite useful. I would quite like squadrons to have an escort setting as well so they will stay with the dropship until they run out of fuel without impacting on the dropship. Hairyscreech
I would think that would happen if you launched the dropship and then a pair of fighters with their target set to the drop ship, in much the same way they tail a ufo?
Albert Kowaletz
Ah, that makes sense. Good idea. Thanks, Hairyscreech. Figured I wouldn't be able to provide any kind of company to my dropships during mid-game anyway with all of my fighters being busy during waves. As a workaround to the missing squadron flexibility I'm sending Condors and Foxtrots separately which often ends in tragedy but it does work. Say, off-topic, is there a way to obtain the experimental builds without resorting to Steam? I guess most bugs and issues I encounter might already have been fixed in later versions. Since the stable version crashes, too, I might as well get the latest.
Gauddlike
Not that I know of. Goldhawk decided to focus more on steam for these builds as it was easier for them to do regular updates compared to other distribution methods.
Safe-Keeper
Yes, squadrons should definitely be able to merge and split. Just as importantly, I want the ability to send up fighters to fly escort for a dropship that's already in flight, or for a squadron to keep going if one or more of the aircraft runs out of fuel, rather than the whole squadron needing to return to base. Pity if it won't be added.
Hairyscreech
I will say I have not tested that method fully and can't be sure that it wont have undesirable effects, I don't really know what will happen if that "formation" gets attacked by an air superiority mission. Veggetossj
Doesnt the screen show u an ETA when assigning planes/ships to targets?
Hairyscreech
Yes, which should say no range when you sent interceptors to a target beyond its range.
