The text size bug can be fixed by diving into the /scripts/ folder for the respective screens and changing the text size. Changing it on the Soldier Equip screen requires /scripts/sequipview.lua for example. It's not a fun experience though. The easiest way to do it (I find) is to find the string in strings.xml and then do a search for the game side of the string in the /scripts/ directory using Find in Files in Notepad++.
