OJSlaughter Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I have come into this habit of naming the Sargeant you get at the beginning after myself. I die alot Quote
Sathra Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Never. I don't change their names at all in my games (maybe shortening the surnames to make room for statcodes). Superstition?... Lord Nyarlathotep says no. Quote
anotherdevil Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 In X-COM I usually name everyone after people I know. And if they are people I don't like, they usually do silly things and die =p Quote
OJSlaughter Posted January 14, 2012 Author Posted January 14, 2012 And if they are people I don't like, they usually do silly things and die =p That is just sadistic P Quote
Jean-Luc Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Never after myself but sometimes after friends and such. Quote
anotherdevil Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 That is just sadistic P Yes, but oh so fun =p But it's ok because I know they're only pixels =] Quote
sogeking99 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I name my guys after characters from books. My best guy is always Durzo Blint. Same on x-com Quote
Zinn Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 Yes. It's cheesy as hell but I like making a character that represents myself and a couple of friends: Helps raise the stakes in missions, when you only have your "real" friends left and someone has to go into the UFO and kill the last alien. Quote
OJSlaughter Posted January 15, 2012 Author Posted January 15, 2012 I name my guys after characters from books. My best guy is always Durzo Blint. Same on x-com In nearly every game I have played: I have named a character after John Blackthorne, the protagonist from James Clavell's Shogun Quote
sogeking99 Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 In nearly every game I have played: I have named a character after John Blackthorne, the protagonist from James Clavell's Shogun That happens too be the next book i'm reading. Quote
OJSlaughter Posted January 15, 2012 Author Posted January 15, 2012 That happens too be the next book i'm reading. Creepy! Great Novel, although his other books are better. Quote
UltimaVirus Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 I do! I name them after people I know so I don't treat them like worthless meatbags. Unless they have low stats... then I name them "Meatbag". Quote
sogeking99 Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 Creepy! Great Novel, although his other books are better. Yeah I recently became interested in the era, and people suggested I read it. Quote
Chris Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 I bought that book last time I was in Waterstones because of the excellent cost:page number ratio it provides. Been about ten years since I read it, but I'll pick it up again at some point in the future. Quote
Zinn Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 I do! I name them after people I know so I don't treat them like worthless meatbags. Unless they have low stats... then I name them "Meatbag". Will you address them in the same way HK-47 does? Quote
UltimaVirus Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Absolutely. "Assertive command: The meatbag will now distract fire while the more important fleshlings do other things." Quote
TheTuninator Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 I haven't started naming soldiers yet because we aren't able to save (unless we are, in which case joke's on me) but when I do, I will probably follow my traditional naming convention of character names from my favorite TV shows, so mainly Buffy, Angel, and Community characters until I run out of male names and have to look elsewhere. Spooky Mulder will, naturally, be the leader. Quote
Sathra Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 You can save, as long as Iron Mode is off. Its just a bit unstable sometimes. Quote
IceVamp Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Nope, never change them. Unless I want a specific callsign in there or something to remember what someone did. Quote
Gauddlike Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 I stick with the original names unless one of them really grates on me. I have occasionally named them after friends but the character of the little pixel pile is gone when you alter its name. It is an immersion thing for me though, I am not thinking about trying to keep a game character alive just so my friends name doesn't get killed off. Quote
Silent_Thunder Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I tend to just give nicknames on units that reach Sargeant or stand out for various reasons.. Gives the important guys some more personality, especially since the names are always based either on their Actual name, or on a defining moment for them (IE Dipshit McGee in X-Com, who managed to kill 4 guys with a badly aimed cannon shot, and for the next 10 missions untill his death managed to accidentially kill at least one rookie each outing.) Quote
Dohon Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I always change the names of my troops. And yes, that includes a virtual avatar of myself. Problem is, I always tend to bite the bullet in the first mission. I think XCOM is trying to tell me something. I haven't renamed them yet in Xenonauts. Once the full beta rolls on, I'll do it though. Let's see if my dying streak lasts. Quote

Problem is, I always tend to bite the bullet in the first mission. I think XCOM is trying to tell me something. I hear you, not only do i rename one for myself but i try to use my whole family!!!! And yes it always seems the game has telepathic powers since it hunts me down and my guy usually get killed with in the first 3 missions while the rest survives :'( Quote
BigityBalzworth Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I know i've done it before, but I don't. It's really not a good idea in my book, since its not a permanent character and will likely end up dead before long. I can actually recall the names of some X-com characters from my exploits from my childhood, even from the demo. thats the impact that game game had on me. Quote
ooey Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 in the original i always name my best man after my dad, since he was in the SAS. I then name other 'good-statted' men things like Ace Rimmer/names from the old spectrum game rebelstar (Leon Trotsky/Slarty Bartfast/Eric etc.). Remember Eric? The little green man with the powerful Photon ;-). Quote
