I actually can't say if they are actually implemented as working pieces of gear in the game. All I can say is that the relevant research is there, but as to whether you'll be able to build them, only Chris and the devs know I'm afraid.

Chris has put alot of work into the research tree to make it have some depth. Personally I don't want to be able to get the best equipment without some work as long as it helps keep the game balanced. What i mean is if you fail to do your research you will eventually get your a$$ handed to you by some badies. That is part of your strategic planning for the later game stages.

I'm with you on that one.

If you can get hold of devastating weapons early on then the enemy lose their threatening presence.

The other side is the panic when you realise you are starting to get overwhelmed and haven't quite got those laser rifles into production yet...

But it is panic in a good way. It challenges you as a player, which is what I prefer. hopefully difficulty levels are balanced enough so that comfort levels are available for those who would just prefer an easy invasion by backward aliens.

I never said that was a bad thing.

I much prefer having to struggle with the decision of building those weapons now or spending a bit of extra cash getting another lab running.

If you can get hold of the weapons early on and then coast along for a while you lose that urgency.
