More active armed forces

Recommended Posts

It would be nice to have alternative messages when UFO's and crash sites times out on the geoscape ("UFO xx has been destroyed/seized by local forces"). Of course, this wouldn't change the decrease in funding from that region any but it would help maintain immersion. As is, it seems that the combined armed forces of the planet has apparently delegated the entire war effort to a pittance of strike teams and a handful of fighter jets.

The problem with this is that it would crash with the whole premise of the game, as to why a small organization is being trusted with this responsibility. They're the only ones who've managed to do it so far when the game starts. Xenonauts have modified their jet to become the F-17, and with it they successfully managed to down UFO's. They tell the world governments that they can stop the aliens, but they need income. Facing annihilation, the world complies.

This is not my interpretation, but a paraphrasing of Goldhawk's fluff. You can read it on the kickstarter page actually.

or rather, have the more active forces and stuff, basicly have messages pop up and say that they have downed a UFO or siezed a crashed one, or even say they fought valiently and got shot down or or the ground "the Alien threat ahs over come the local forces, repaired thier ship and escaped back into space." just a thought, make it interesting :-)

I think it would be fun if some governments, like Russia, would be able to shoot down a UFO occasionally. Their aircraft might not be able to do so, but they did have surface to air missiles in those times. So if a UFO went too close to a military base it might generate one of these events. The Russians would then request the Xenonauts to investigate and clear the site, as they are the specialists, and especially a bit later, the ones with advanced tech.

If the devs decide to make military bases regardless of the stretch goal not being reached, these would make an excellent place for the SAM sites of other countries. It would also give the aliens a good reason to attack them and launch the military base mission. If you are successful enough the SAM site might be spared.

The SAM sites wouldn't be able to shoot down bigger UFOs, but it would be very nice to have them shoot down some of those fighters which never spawn missions anyway.

If a government see that they can actually combat the aliens by themselves, why would they give money to an independent organization where they aren't privy to their information, or can give direct orders?

And hence the decrease in funding (equal to the whatever letting a UFO escape adds up to, no need to get fancy and add new gameplay elements to be balanced at this point). The governments of the world fighting a losing battle =! not fighting at all, especially considering the cold war military doctrine of deploying and intercepting nukes (with surface to air missile installations among other things). The Xenonauts being jointly funded doesn't equal them being the main focus of the war effort (the low level of funding seem to confirm this).

Looking at the scientific reports they do seem to be the main cross-disciplinary international scientific project pertaining alien technology however, with independent "aquisition" units attached.

That is an idea that Chris has been knocking around as a way to remove the basic small craft from the game once your tech has progressed to the point where they are no longer a challenge and become annoying.

He mentioned that this may be because you share your tech with your allies to allow them to become more proficient at shooting down these small craft, leaving you free to concentrate on the larger threats.

Here's an example.... I've gone to playing xcom apocalypse and early on with just the probes and scouts, the local forces aka the police hover cars engage them. One of three things happens, they shoot it down, keep it busy till my craft gets there and shoots it down, or they just get destroyed. something like this would be awsome.

This is good for me

Wouldn't the Aliens continue to modify their vessels for atmospheric flight though (ie get better fighters as the game progresses?).

They complete the modifications on their bigger, more powerful, vessels.

Instead of coming up against fighters and scouts you face heavy fighters and corvettes, then later it might be dreadnoughts.

I would like to see the fighter role continue through the game though.

I don't know if there are stronger alien fighters to continue the air superiority missions as the game progresses but I hope so :)

Like Gauddlike I presumed that this would be due to the advancement of funding nation technology, allowing their interceptors to take out the small stuff while being outmatched by the larger craft now capable of launching attacks. It certainly fits in well with the timing of things in the game.

I also hope for more advance fighters to add diversity into even the later assaults.

What makes you think they aren't privy to information?

And who do you think would give the govenments in question the needed edge?

Just becasue the armies of the wrold can combat the aliens doesn't mean they can do so effectively.

The fighters go Fighter >>> Heavy Fighter >>> Interceptor in terms of direct replacements. The Strike Cruiser is a replacement for the Bomber. I guess you can assume that the UFOs of the previous types stop appearing because the local forces have gained the ability to shoot them down rather than the UFOs themselves stop appearing - but in game that's not stated explicitly.

That's what I thought I had seen but wasn't sure.

Nice to keep the alien tactics consistent but still allow the conflict to escalate.

I think having news events pop up ('New French SAM downs first alien craft!') that herald the decline and eventual end of the minor alien craft types would be very cool, and give you the feel that the rest of the world is fighting alongside you.

That definitely would be more immersion, giving you the feeling that the world's military is actually doing something aside from giving each other mean looks AND would be a nice logical reason for why you don't see the smaller ships anymore. Or your Radar operators are just not notifying you of them since they're not worth the effort and have sent them to the nearest country's military.
