I asked on the kickstarter page if this was possible, but got no reply.

I stumbled on this by going through the forums, very excited by it.

Is it possible to modify the actually tiles?

Yes.

You can modify the individual tiles or add your own if you are talented enough.
They are just image files.
They also have a spectre file attached that stores information that the game needs when using that tile.
The submap editor will be able to add that for you as well though.
