But then you should make it more clear what the intention is, currently it looks like a bug and is rather confusing for the player.

It is intentional the fuel meter meter in combat shows how much fuel you have left until you are forced to disengage and return to base for refueling.

There are two fuel meters during combat and both show different values.

The rapid burn of fuel for using afterburner is another example of 'human-hobbling' that has improved the chances for the aliens. I don't like it but I sure agree it's realistic. Using afterburner is a huge fuel burn, especially for those 70's jobs .Sure wish we had the F-4 Phantom instead of the ficticious advanced F-16 way before it's time thing. And how about the actual Firefox from the movie as the MiG? When did the F-15 come in? That could be the advanced fighter you can research as well.

Eh? The Game's set in 1979. F16 first flew in 1974, production version flew in mid 1978 and was being delivered in mid-late 1979.

Considering the Xenonauts are meant to be Earth's first and foremost alien fighting agency, it would totally be realistic that the newest possible equipment was diverted to them at the first opportunity.
