I would love if you could re-order the way soldiers appear in the roster and consequently in combat.

My main gripe is that I like to put my guys in squads, but it's hard to move the soldiers in squads when they're all over the place in the roster (i.e. Soldier ALPHA Scout is hot-key 1, but Soldier ALPHA Heavy is hot-key 7, and Soldier ALPHA Sniper is hot-key 9).

If it were possible to re-order the roster (even just alphabetically/numerically) in a way that would persist from mission to mission, it would be much easier to move guys around in squads instead of clicking through all the hot-keys or hunting around the map for your sniper or heavy. I could then put all my ALPHA guys at the beginning of the roster, and my BRAVO guys at then end, so I can move them using hot-keys 1-4 for the ALPHAs and hot-keys 5-8 for the BRAVOs.

It would make giving orders in combat a little easier and less time consuming in my opinion.

Also would make it easier to separate the experienced grunts from the cannon fodder on the base management screen.

Personally I would like dropship position to determine the hotkey used rather than roster position.

Then when you equip your squads and set their order of debarkation you are also making sure their hotkeys run consecutively.

This could start at the top left trooper (as 1) and work down then across from them, depending on your layout.

For example:

1 4 7

2 5 8

3 6 9

Or:

1 3 6

- 4 7

2 5 8

I agree, that would be another way of doing it. And importantly I think your method would also persist between combat missions, so you wouldn't have to fiddle with the troopers in the dropship between each combat mission (unless one of them bit the bullet in the last one).

I'm glad someone else sees a need for something like this. I'm not sure how hard it would be to implement, but it would really make things more "tidy" for me, make moving units in a cohesive manner much easier, and would make the unit hot-keys a little more relevant.

One little nitpick I have with your ordering though is that in the way I tend to play, the first guys out of the dropship are usually disposable meatbags fit solely for getting eyes on enemies and not necessarily surviving till the next turn. I wouldn't want them in the first few auto-hotkeys ... but in the end that's just "semantics" and I'd be happy with any implementation that let me set certain soldiers to the auto-hotkeys in a manner that persists between missions.

After some more playtime last night, I had another idea.

You could also accomplish the goal mentioned above with simply being able to re-order (drag and drop) the troopers in the roster in the drop-ship menu.

Instead of being able to drag the troopers only from the list to the spaces in the drop-ship, you could make it possible to drag troopers around in the list as well.

For example moving trooper who is in SLOT ONE to the right of trooper in SLOT EIGHT, effectively making him the new SLOT EIGHT trooper while all the other troopers slide left to fill in the empty slot left by the trooper who was in SLOT ONE.

That would also make sense as you can easily see which trooper you are moving so you know when you have your squads together.

Maybe it could be an extra option on the soldier equip screen so that when you select the dropship you can also pick a position number.

Anything to make life easier for the player, even if it makes it harder for Chris ;)
