Chris
During the week I created a "compatibility branch" for the game on Steam, and also distributed the files along with V1.5 to Humble Store / Desura / GOG etc. This is used primarily for performance on low-end machines as it does not use tile atlases or file archives, but it also has an important benefit for modders - it does not use tile atlases or file archives. This basically means you have full access to all of the terrain tiles in /tiles/ and the unit sprites in /units/ and some other things too. Therefore you won't have to use any strange tools to "unpack" these archive files or anything, all you need to do is switch your Steam branch and let the unpacked game download. Instructions on how to access the compatibility branch are here: http://www.goldhawkinteractive.com/forums/showthread.php/12716-Xenonauts-Steam-Branches
