Xenonauts - Steam Branches

Recommended Posts

One of the best features of Steam is that it allows developers to create multiple "branches" of their code that users can switch between at will. Steam will then automatically download the appropriate files for that branch of the game.

These are the branches available for Xenonauts on Steam:

  • Stable / Default: this is the "official" default branch on Steam, so if you don't know what branch you're on then you're almost certainly on this one.
  • Experimental (Windows only): our public test branch, used to evaluate the stability of our new releases before we released them to the Stable branch. Not used much now development on Xenonauts has ended.
  • Compatibility: this version of the game does not use tile atlases or sprite archiving, which slows load times but can help performance on low end machines (Mac / Linux in particular). It is also ideal for modders, as it gives them full access to all the sprites and terrain tiles.
  • Legacy: when we update the Stable branch, we move the old files to the Legacy branch so people can finish their campaigns before they update.
  • Community (X:CE): this contains Xenonauts: Community Edition, the unofficial community-led continuation of development. Coders have been given access to the game source code and can release updates to this Steam branch.

If you would like to access any of these branches, you will need to do the following:

  • Load up the Steam game library
  • Right click on Xenonauts >>> Properties >>> Betas
  • Choose your branch from the drop-down list
  • You can revert to the standard official branch at any time by selecting the "NONE" option from the same list.

If you are not on Steam, you will have to acquire the files in other ways. The Compatibility branch should be available as a .zip from your chosen download store, and the Community edition should be available in their sub-forum etc.
