Each map in Xenonauts constists of multiple smaller sub maps. These small bits of map can be anything from buildings to small patches of forests. The idea is that each submap can have multiple variations that are randomly chosen each time the map is played to get more variation in the game.

Have a look in the maps folders for examples.

Each folder inside the tileset named folders is a collection of submaps fitting a theme.

For example maps/farm/building/barn15x20 has a selection of barns that all sit on a 15x20 tile footprint.

If you were to place the barn15x20 submap in the level editor then it would randomly pick one of those available barn layouts each time the level was generated.

It allows you to create more variation even on the standard Goldhawk created maps by adding more submaps to the folder.

Just be sure to stick fairly closely to the theme of each submap folder.

It looks a bit off if someone has placed office10x10 expecting to get one of a selection of office buildings but you have added a duck pond to that folder.
