Stretch Goal Poll Options

The problem for the boxed copies is I don't even know where to start looking to get them produced...

I take it Brian Fargo never got back to you when you asked him? I know they were able to offer boxed games for the $50 tier, though I'm assuming that's a serious economy of scale issue and printing like 100 boxes would be much more expensive. One other random thought would be to reach out to some of the board/card game projects on Kickstarter and see how they're doing it. I know Steve Jackson's doing the Ogre print run in China and they have 6000+ copies but maybe some of the smaller card/board game guys have ideas since they pretty much have to get boxes made up in order to ship/present their games. I backed one called Shadow Days, who's doing a small card game - maybe they have some thoughts. Even if it costs, say, $50 per box, if that lets you sell a boxed copy for $100, that's a win.

What I would really love to have besides additional missions and tilesets would be a Memorial Screen à la Cannon Fodder, with or without portraits (might get too cluttered with pictures, but black-white photos of your soldiers with a black ribbon at the corner and maybe their medals displayed would be cool), but at any rate with name, rank, date and place of the casualty, maybe even with status (what happened to the poor guy/gal).

Something like:

Sgt. Chris England

KIA, Russia, 3rd May 1979

Cpl. Ivan Sheojev

DOW, Defense of Caracas, 15th July 1979

Cpt. Martin Kramer

MIA, France, 10th September 1979

I reckon the Firaxis game will have something like this, so it might look like a copycat move, but I wouldn't be too worried about that.

Range of non crash missions- which might involve a new tileset

Military base duty

Rescue the civilian could be good but they would need to have extra health or spawn somewhere safeish to start with-else it becomes a nightmare scenario.

Rescue top secret intelligence coulld be better- though it would have to be clearly marked.

-dislike levelling vehicles- as we have improved ones as the game progresses

A military base mission could become a new crashed UFO tileset aswell perhaps.

I think pilot portraits etc should come under the kickstarter tiers- to gain interest in the game- if you could guarantee 200 portraits -thats 40k-minus the cost of the artist.

Pilots Medals should be included with soldier medal system.

Firaxis does in fact have this feature. It was discussed in the latest 2 articles on their game on RPS. I DO like that feature though :)

It is included in their game so would potentially be seen as a rip off

Maybe, but the whole game is a rip-off of UFO: Enemy Unknown, and Firaxis in turn stole the feature from Cannon Fodder :) The internet can be strange, so a Memorial Screen might possibly create a backlash, but seeing as most Xenonauts fans are either anti-Firaxis or looking forward to both games, I don't know whether potential bad publicity would really effect actual sales. Personally, I don't judge the potential of this idea backfiring very high anyway.

Well then, in order of preference I'd like to see:

- additional mission objectives / mission types (protect person x/equipment/building y, evac z civilians, ...)

- "survive till rescue arrives"-missions for downed transports

- soldiers to have a file with their deeds during service (killed x aliens during investigation of crash site y, saved private newguy from bleeding to death in defense of Moscow during terror raid z, died to a grenade when squaddie lowmorale dropped it during the nth attack on base somewhere)

- more tilesets (nuclear powerplant, airport/train station/freight harbor)

and in case the kickstarter ends up raising a ton of money (as I sure hope it will :D) I wouldn't mind if you feel like pushing back the release date so you can put all this money to good use. Especially since we have access to the dev builds anyway ;)

Good luck!

Alex

Throwing in a vote for the military base raid and additional secondary objectives in general; for UFOs which have landed voluntarily there could be a secondary objective based on their reason for landing (free abducted civilians, prevent damage to certain structures, etc.)

Voting for slopes and more variable battlefield in general.

Considering additional mission types, it seems interesting but hard to balance. Maybe it should be possible to turn them off? Like ufo swarming in Greyfiend's mod for Ufo: ET.

Mission Types

Some could use existing graphics and with others you get a new map option that could be used elsewhere. Any others to add to the list?

Military Base - losing will reduce funding and local force support

Port attack – protect shipping of funding nation

Island attack – more a map than a mission

Alien Base – specialised alien bases for different purposes – weird gas into the atmosphere etc. Could use nearly all existing graphics.

Airfield – allows local forces to intercept later in game more effectively

Alien artefact site - what are they really up to? from TFTD

Building search/ raid - to prevent alien infiltration

Cruise Ship - protect um tourism.

Oil Rig - claustrophobic and protects funding nations energy reserves

Defend research station– use base graphics?

Defend radar station of funding nation – use base graphics?

Subdue hostile local forces – use existing graphics

Assassinate hostile government representative/ mind controlled dupe – defended by existing local forces

Defend crashed Chinook - using any of the existing maps

Area denial – plant explosive as carpet bombing from above is harsh.

Hold off attack on power station/ reactor/ hospital etc

Rescue key research scientist – bonus for a particular line of research or an unlock to research.

Rescue hostages

Escort diplomat safely – either an interceptor mission (imagine that) or across a battlescape (as long as they can dodge)

Protect mines – some sort of manufacturing bonus? And you get a new map.

Hold off alien attack of town for X turns– terror attack with different and increased spawning – huge propaganda benefits.

Alien hunt – an overly aggressive alien is contained in a busy building – hunt it down

standard missions

UFO Recovery of landed craft

UFO Crash Retrieval

Alien Base

Alien Terror Site

Base Defence

I like this idea a lot - maybe have it where there's one crashed transport and another lands nearby but not right on top of the first so that you have to fight your way through to the trapped comrades while they have to try to hold off the aliens until they get rescued. Brings to mind "Black Hawk Down", which I thought was one of the more intense movies/books about squad-based combat.

I would love to see a opening and multiple ending cinematics. These add to the grab of the title if done well. Look at X-Com even Empire of the Fading Suns. As good and great examples.

I would also love to see some voice actors for the troopers. Some general order recieved, on the bounce, each trooper has several "triggers" a few confirm orders (which can be turned off). A panic reponse, a dying reponse, maybe a occasional kill response.

I think something similar to the voice for the fighter jet chatter where you can hear it but not very clearly is perfect. It adds that small touch, but doesnt make it to heavy for producing

hard to say. Though with the memorial Idea...

It could be a giant letter "X" made up in granite or onyx (some sort of dark stone that shines well) and the names could appear in gold on it (black and gold always look good). Each "arm" of the X could be for the lower ranks whilst the meeting point of them could be for high ranking soldiers. It would fill in gradually over time and you could click on it whenever you wanted to. Not sure how much this would actually take to implement though.

Maybe have a zoomed out view showing the whole thing but it would be small font there so you'd need a zoomed in view toggle button so you could read all the names. This could then also be a part of the credits too somehow tying the names on the memorial to a "Soldiers lost in action" section in the credits. In the credits then you could list name, country, # of missions, # of kills etc

How about boarding alien motherships in orbit - to get the information for the final mission on Mars (at least I presume the final mission will go in similar way to the original game).

Edit: will there be multi-floored alien ships? I expected that at least from corvette, since it's capable of terror missions.

I would say defenetly new tilesets.

But please not vehicle levelling. I know many guys want that, but you shouldn't be forced to implement something you don't want in the game.

I do think that you need to make the vehicles MUCH more durable, though. That was always the deal with vehicles and soldiers. Soldiers have the advantage of levelling up and being more flexible in their movement.

The vehicles were always good because they could take really many shots before going down. They were literally tanks.

What about more customization options for aircraft and vehicles?

For example sacrificing a weapon slot for additional fuel tanks. Or a whole new engine hardpoint for planes.

And what about landing craft? In X-Com Apocalypse it worked really well - passenger compartment, bio storage, etc.

I agree with this, but honestly I'm rarely losing guys right now anyway....so im ok with that currently. If my guys started dying in droves Id be more inclined to whine more about the flimsy tanks

A good 200.000 strech would be a more immersive NPC AI interaction between aliens/X-com/world population

For example, in some missions NPCs with military-type AI that would help fight against the Aliens. Put some military bases in the world map, some type of missions that aliens attack those military defense structures and you have to bail them out in the middle of the battle, etc.

I do believe that the single most important thing in the game after the general quality of the game (that seems covered so far), its realy a better immersion and interaction between X-Com and the rest of the world. DIferent types of mini-missions that involve protecting a town, or attacking an alien secret based that was discovered by the world-secret services, etc.

In sum, $200 strech should be all about adding NPC content (in the form of more events, interactions, heck even a secret-service-military faction that helps or requests help from now and then).

The feeling that you have to save the world is so much better when you have feedback from the other people (other than the funding already present ofc).
