Complete french translation for xenonauts

Recommended Posts

Hello guys!

I've finally achieved this french translation for Xenonauts!

It took me 9 months of work but i'm glad to share it now.

You can find both "strings", "xenopaedia" and "gcloading_tips" files fully translated with great care.

PS: Chris, i strongly suggest you to include this patch into the vanilla game, because i have no doubt there's a consequent community of french players that would have already buy the game if it had been translated before!

Note:

NOTE:

Bon jeu!

Patch FR 1.59.zip

Patch FR CE 0.34.zip

Lore+ (FR).zip

Extended Weapon Descriptions for Fighters (FR).zip

Armoured Assault! (FR).zip

Fire in the Hole (FR).zip

Aegis Armor (FR).zip

I can't speak for Chris, but I expect the translation cannot be included with the game as it is if it overwrites files (since that'd remove the original English texts). However if you provided it as a mod (*), it could be shipped with the game and French players would only need to manage to enable the mod in the game launcher. I'd certainly be willing to ship it with X:CE (especially if you translated also the few X:CE-only strings).

(*) In the case of a translation such as this, creating a mod should be simple, see http://www.goldhawkinteractive.com/forums/showthread.php/11638-Modular-mods-system-tutorial-and-examples (it's mostly the "Creating a simple empty mod", "Mod that changes or adds UI strings" and "Mod changing spreadsheet XML file" parts, it should be basically just creating the modinfo.xml file, adding the files there, clearing the Image column in xenopedia.xml (since that one is not changed by translation) and creating the .zip archive). Another advantage of creating a mod instead of replacing the original files would be that if a translation is missing, with a mod the original English text would be still used.

Hi Ilunak!

I tried to create a mod containing my translations with a modinfo file but it seems it doesn't work. (I have the release 1.59 of xenonauts installed)

Could you try it? I don't understand the problem.

It looks like the issue is that you've not set the two files up according to the Modular Mod system: http://www.goldhawkinteractive.com/forums/showthread.php/11433-Documentation-Modular-mods-system

It can be a bit complex to understand (looking at other mods that alter strings.xml and xenopedia.xml like Lore+ may help you see how it works) but basically it exists to ensure that people can play your translation along with other mods that also change the same files.

I'm not really an expert on it, kabill or Max_Caine understand it better than me.

Hi Anon, you've done some great work translating it, so it's only fair that people like me look at your work. I should have tomorrow afternoon off so I will look through it then and see what I can do to help. So long as I'm not called to do another 12hr shift like today....

The mod itself is correct. It appears that the accented character in the mod name breaks it. If you change <Name> to be just "Version francaise", it works.

Just tried it and it seemed to be working fine, at least with the latest version of XCE. Have you checked that the mod is in the assets/mods folder as a regular folder (not a .zip) and also that the mod is activated in the 'mod tools' tab of the game launcher?

EDIT: Ninja'd, but I didn't need to change anything. Might be because I'm using XCE though.

Hello Guys thank you for your answers!

The problem came from the "ç" of "française" in the modinfo file! Thank you Ilunak you've solved it!

I have uploaded the corrected and perfectly working mod on the top of this page.

Have a good day!

Hello Chris, developpers, commanders, leaders, officers or whatever you are!

I must admit that i haven't finished the game yet so i couldn't check all the entries ingame... (however i've reached the late game)

Consequently, there should remain some display issues with a few of them.

In fact, sometimes the french texts are a little bit longer than the english ones, and need to be shortened to appear correctly into the game.

These potential issues essentially concern the "strings" file.

I will correct the patch progressively if necessary and post a definitive edition as soon as possible (when i'll know the epilogue of my own war indeed!).

Ps: this translation was a tribute to my passion for the beloved original XCOM Enemy Unknown game, but i wouldn't even have had the idea of initiate such a work if your remake had not been that amazing Proust's madeleine!

There's an option in gameconfig.xml that will let you set text strings to automatically resize if they are too long for the text field, which is designed specifically for translators. I can't remember exactly what it's called, but have a look and see if it helps.

Merci bien!

Yes Chris i have included a copy of the gameconfig file from my 1.59 release into the mod.

The entry "TEXTS AUTOSCALING" has been settled on "true".

This new mod is now linked on my first post.

Would it be possible to display an ad in the Xenofeed RSS containing a link toward the first page of this thread to advise the french players who don't use the forum?

Yes Chris i have included a copy of the gameconfig file from my 1.59 release into the mod.

The entry "TEXTS AUTOSCALING" has been settled on "true".

And several hundred others too, even though the mod doesn't intend to (re)set them. See e.g. http://www.goldhawkinteractive.com/forums/showthread.php/11638-Modular-mods-system-tutorial-and-examples?p=131290&viewfull=1#post131290 for how to mod properly a simple config value.

I 've made a gameconfig as you reommanded:

<?xml version="1.0"?>

<GameConfig>

<autoscaleTexts value="true"/>

</GameConfig>

The mod works fine on my 1.59 release, but it seems that this option can scale texts and prevent display issues only on the "blackboards" fields of the game, but not into the menus.

Whatever, this is my last word because my passion for modding is quite limited indeed...

I've made a release of my french translation mod containing all additionnal CE entries.

Next step is to translate the mod called "Extended Weapon Descriptions for Fighters".

The "Lore +" mod contains strings and xenopedia, but strangely these files can't be opened correctly so it won't be possible to translate them.

EDIT: translation for EWDF completed!

The Lore+ strings and xenopedia actually are openoffice files. I've converted them to the Word format thus started to translate them.
