My suggestion is to fully use the capabilities of the new 3d engine and add some dynamic camera angles. Something similar to what we've seen in Incubation or modern XCOM - zooming, closeups, first-person view, both durind enemy and xenonauts turn. Ideally, these sequences should be skippable and|or the player should be able to adjust the frequency of this "dramatic cam".
I think the turn to 3d should really make an ipmact, like the difference between Final Fantasy 6 and 7 (another impressive exmple of 3d camera in battles).
