View Full Version : Official Geoscape Map Corrections and Additions.
Creating this thread for posting of correct co-ordinates and names of various cities, as well as any border corrections.
Don't derail it or start random discussions about minutiae. Try to keep it focused.

Not being a dick, but what is 'minutiae'?
Looking forward to a more fleshed out world map soon!
Not being a dick, but what is 'minutiae'?
It's Latin for "insignificant details" or something to that effect.
On a more topical note: Windhoek is the capital city of Namibia, not Nigeria.
Yes, arguing about what minutiae means is minutiae.

Comedy Gold.
There is a 'small' matter(just ask most mainland Australians) of the unfortunate exclusion of Tasmania from the Australian Continent:
205
Also, as as the other state capitals of Australia are present the other missing one is Darwin, Northern Territory. Its mostly desert out there, however it does contain on of Australias largest Airforce bases, so could be considered thematically important to the Xenonauts Geoscape - unlike tasmania, but I guess its only fair they are included too.

ha ha and now darwin has one of America's bases too!
By that map it looks like Christchurch is off too... will have to change that. And no Auckland? It only has half our population...
i noticed that whole Philippines and Sulawesi as well as Micronesia is missing.
any plans to bring them back?
to me, is ok to omit Micronesia, but Philippines and Sulawesi are very prominant lands on earth, if xcom 1 & 2 were able to represent these 2 lands with polygon-shaped borders decade ago, i think Xenonaut will have weak excuse to omit them today...
hey, we might intercepted and shoot down UFOs to crash on these 2 lands, ya' know~ :p

Another minor thing, but is Brisbane a few 100k's further south on that map than it should be?
If possible, please try to include the Geoscape map co-ordinates for cities if you can. It would be a great help to Chris and the team (and save them time as well).
Got to represent!
Europe;
X 4335 Y 0681 - Oslo
X 4216 Y 0655 - Bergen
X 4331 Y 0602 - Trondheim
X 4513 Y 0460 - Tromsų
X 4651 Y 0437 - Hammerfest (Northernmost town in the world! Or so we like to think!)

Berlin is missing.
Do you have the coordinates?
and listing all the capitals in europe would make it a bit crowded would it not? Maybe Rome Moscow and either London or Paris? and skip the rest unkess really zoomed in?
Well yes, zooming in to see them is a given. But I don't think one should skip major cities like that. Millions of people live in them after all. I reckon it's a quick thing to input a spot and a name, and as long as it is, I'd rather have as much detail as possible really. I want to know the name of the city/village I'm rampaging through!
Aditional cities, using the cities.xml as a template. Checking locations and populations take a while! Phew!
I have listed all capitals at the standard zoom levels, but others are a bit further in. Unless there were loads of space. I think this is around 26 cities. So about 50% more! Yay.
Posting these directly into the cities file will not work however. Dunno why, I'm too tired to investigate, though I suspect there has to be strings for each and every city. Hold on.. yep.
So if you want these in your game NOW, you still have some work to do. :p

are these 1979 population levels? =p
are these 1979 population levels? =p
[Expletive]!!!!
To be fair, it was four in the morning when I was doing this. >.<
Worst part, I even considered the date, because I saw the soviet union be so far west. Damn.
My questions is: Does it even matter? And how accurate should the population numbers be? Exact, nearest hundred, nearest thousand?
Obviously it should be accurate down to the newborn babies each ingame month! Someone has alot of research to do! Hop to it!
:p

I for instance wouldn't care, but I bet that someone out there would...
But where in game do you see the population exactly?
anotherdevil

I'm not sure... Maybe during terror missions? Or maybe if the aliens do enough 'damage' to cities they will eventually blink out...?
Ohh, that would be quite cool actually.
You see the population on the geoscape, and I guess it drops while a terror mission is active? (they have casualty counters on the mission, along with a timer).
If you fail a terror mission though, or don't reach it before the timer runs out, the city is nuked and probably disappears from the map.
The population line is probably not going to be in the final game, I'm afraid (sorry for wasting your research). There's too much information there if it is, and the screen ends up too cluttered.

Well, at least I won't have to research it again to find the 1979 populations. I still have to summon the courage to enter strings for all of these, to test them, and I'm not sure how one goes about it.

To show them on the map you need to add the city name and country name to your strings.xml
For example to get Oslo to show on your geoscape add:
<Row ss:AutoFitHeight="0">
<Cell><Data ss:Type="String">Oslo</Data></Cell>
<Cell><Data ss:Type="String">Oslo</Data></Cell>
</Row>
And:
<Row ss:AutoFitHeight="0">
<Cell><Data ss:Type="String">Norway</Data></Cell>
<Cell><Data ss:Type="String">Norway</Data></Cell>
</Row>
Any more cities you add with the country Norway will now display that part fine, it only needs to be in once no matter how many times it is used.
Thanks. :)
I'll throw this in the wiki.

Should have thought of adding it to the wiki then linking it...
At least someone did ;)

I Found a Zip Code list at work for all the US CIties, and in that list it included Lat and Long for each. http://federalgovernmentzipcodes.us/
Dont know if it will help.
Also, I noticed I could not place a Base in Puerto Rico because it was not showing as land on the large map (no zooming) Just FYI

Is this the proper place for a geoscape suggestion or just city corrections? I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it and I didn't see it when i looked around but maybe the day/night cycle could be modified to be more like it should be on a flat map (http://www.daylightmap.com/index.php)?
anotherdevil
02-01-2012, 04:15
Yeah Gazz mentioned it in the old forums, but while correct it's not what most people expect to see
I was expecting more of a cone shape then a curve like that tbh. Is the change that quick close to the polar circles?
clever id
02-01-2012, 05:52
Apparently the actually shape varies some over the course of a year. The tilt of the earth contributes to the cycle to and from 24 hours of night/day the north/south poles experience over the year. Here's a better site (http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/earthview.php), scroll down for a more science filled explanation. Change the date to one 6 months from now to see the tilt effect in action.
Back on topic, personally I think it would feel more natural than the straight line and look nicer but then again Chris et al. are the ones designing the game so it's their call. Oh, and I'm not suggesting they worry about the earth wobble, just the curve... Unless they want to do earth wobble ;)
Type in march 21 and Chris version becomes accurate =P

Yes, secretly, because of mind control, what you don't realise is that the entire game actually takes place over one day =p

I guess you could just rename it, I don't know how accurate it is though.

Silly AD obviously the aliens placed 1 base on the geographic north and one on the geographic south and then untilted the earth in relation to the sun!

Is this the correct place to mention Islands - or is it just cities?
I know Chris as said previously that the land-sea mask with the current map was a place holder and he intended to return to it before release once the code for the game was all in place, to include contries like the Philipines. There are a number of other Islands that it would be good to include:
Mediteranean: Add Cyprus, Malta
Make Land: Crete
(all would be useful for placing bases with Europe, Middle East, Russia and North Africa overlaps).
