(This news article is copied directly from the News blog on www.xenonauts.com (http://www.xenonauts.com) - check it out!)

It’s been nearly a month since Paypal shut us down, and the majority of those four weeks have been spent setting up the infrastructure required to take both Xenonauts and Goldhawk Interative forwards from this. The launch of the new Xenonauts website marks the end of this journey, allowing us to finally get back on track with development. Has the last month been wasted, then? I wouldn’t say so. It may seem that little progress has been made on the game, and to an extent it is true that we’ve probably been set back a couple of weeks of development thanks to this eating up all my time. However, there are several notable benefits that have arisen from our new infrastructure.

For the community, the most notable of them are the the new forums we have set up at GoldhawkInteractive.com, our corporate site. These forums are powered by vBulletin rather than the integrated Joomla Agora systems we were using before. Consequently they are MUCH sleeker and more usable than before – and they’ll serve us better in the future too, as you won’t have to move forums to keep tracking any games we start producing after Xenonauts is done. We’ve also set up an official Xenonauts wiki, which should provide a valuable resource for anyone interested in modding the game or even just looking for some help understanding what’s going on in the current development builds of the game.

The new Xenonauts site is here mostly just to sell the game – I don’t think the previous site did a good enough job of showing the world and the artwork of the game, and didn’t quite reflect the look the game is going for. We’re trying to make Xenonauts appealing to the mainstream as well as the strategy veterans, so the site has to reflect that. I think the previous one could be quite intimidating sometimes.

Of course, convincing people to buy the game is useless if they can’t actually buy it – and we’ve now successfully launched our Desura pre-orders, so you can buy the game again! We’ve made a few changes to the pre-order system to mark the move to Desura – firstly, the price of a standard pre-order has fallen from $29.99 to $19.99 and we expect the final game to retail at this price. We’ve also got a Premium pre-order pack available for $29.99, which gets you a custom forum title and some other small goodies, but is mostly for people who want to help the project out as much as they can. If you’ve already pre-ordered the game, we are putting a system in place that will either let you claim a Premium pre-order or take a Standard pre-order and a $10 refund (details on how this will be returned are TBC).

Finally, we’ve decided to open out the forums now that Desura are holding our pre-orders. This means the pre-orderers and normal community are no longer segregated, so everyone can participate in the discussions whether or not they’ve pre-ordered the game. I was never happy with effectively splitting the community in two, so now you should all be able to participate whether you’ve given us your money or not!

New site looks good, Chris, I've only taken it for a short spin so far, but I like what I see

Looks good Chris. Found a few typos and a couple of bugs/oversights but the new site should do a good job of "selling the game".

Bug1. The extraterrestrials menu title can't fit inside its box:
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/9767/xnauts.jpg

Bug2. Identical Iceland Incident menu titles. No pt1/2 differentiation.
http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/768/xnauts2.jpg

I have to admit I'm curious about the price change. An arguable 33% off is no small amount and it came sort of out of the blue. I know you're not too keen to talk about it but whatever the reason I hope it attracts more sales and pays off.

Actually there is a difference in the Icelandic incident part one and 2. Except like the first picture, #2 can't fit inside its box. If you look to the left of the barrel of the assault rifle (in the bottom picture) there is a small 2 below the 'iceland' in iceland incident

Project Status is missing a link to the Pre-Order page, and the link in the sales pitch (a.k.a. "Why Pre-Order?") is broken.

Regardless, the new design looks neat!

Oh yeah, well spotted. :p I guess all menu titles will need to be pushed to the left a bit.

Ooh, new air-combat GUI.

Under Battlefield Equipment, it has "electric stan batons".

And the Chinook can only carry 10 troopers now?

Sweet, indeed. I could've sworn it was featured in a screenshot on the old site, though.

From what I understand, the pre-orders won't be available until the near future so that's why there is no access to those features, yet.

I've fixed up these issues now, except for the menu one - I'm not sure that can be easily fixed. If anyone sees any typos etc please let me know.

The Chinook actually holds 12 soldiers, I just can't count.

Love the new site. It looks great. I think it will do a good job of selling the game.

Looks really sleek and commercial, 4.5 of 5 :)
I suggest changing the "Iceland Incident 1" to something like "Iceland Inc. 1" since I guess all the boxes in the menu is the same size?

Keep up the awesome work, loving the 'return' of a great game...

Hi there,

Just wondered if it was possible for you to set up an RSS feed on the news section of the new website. You had one before and that was how I kept an eye on any developments, I'm not always going to be browsing the forum for stuff so a feed would be useful.

Cheers, and keep it up!

Chris

Majority of the useful info will actually be posted on this site rather than the Xeno one (that more for sales purposes). Rss feed for the Goldhawk blog is:

Happy to see that you got the pre-order problems sorted out and the game is going forward again. Was supposed to pre-order months ago, and I guess now it's the time to do it. Sadly, as an unemployed bum, I don't have a credit card. Guess I just have to give my old man a call and do it with his. :D

Got even more excited about the game after learning that the sounds will be made by Kaamos, who did an amazing job with Amnesia. Couldn't think of a better man for the job. Seeing as the sound effects (and music) were a big part of Enemy Unknown's atmosphere for me, I'm hoping that he can create something appropriately creepy for Xenonauts.

Best of luck with the game, looking forward to doing some alien autopsies next year (Too bad I'm not a small kid anymore, have some golden memories of shocking my nanny with those in the 90s. ;)).

Very nice new site and forums :)

By the way, the logo in the wiki reads: Set $swlogo to the URL path... etc

Keep up the very good work!

Where the old forum?! Where is my profile?! Where did all the posts?!

P. S. I did preorder Xenonauts under this login ... May 19, 2011.

Hi Yevgeniy - if you go to your Paypal account email address there should be an email there explaining what's happened and letting you claim the Desura pre-order. It's a long story. If you haven't got the Desura invite email, drop me an email and I'll sort you out.

Sorry to hear about the troubles. Hope things smooth out for you guys. Considering I still force myself to play xcom through the steam client from time to time I'm fully looking forward to your guys success.

Premium Pre-Order all the way! :D

Ahh, it's good to be back :) The site and forums look nice Chris, I hope the game is moving along nicely. Of course I went with the premium preorder, I support you guys 100%.

Regarding the possible bonuses for the premium pre-orderers, I'd like to make a suggestion. My guess is that the game will have an (infinite?) pool of soldiers for hire with random names, right? Well I thought it would be cool if you guys could add the premium pre-orderers' real names (if they so wish, of course) into that pool. I would love it if I had a physical presense in the game and I'm sure other pre-orderers would love it too. I don't know if it's possible of course, just a suggestion :)

Just as I was about to Pre-Order, Paypal decided to be problematic.

I'm terribly excited about this. Congrats on moving forward, Chris!!

I suggested something similar on the old forums, but as far as I know, Chris never commented on the viability of my proposition. It did garner some support from the community, though.

So the 'Premium' version is available but not decided what bonuses will be included in it yet? Is there any idea of the kind of bonus it will include?

Chris
11-07-2011, 21:39
The bonuses aren't finalised, and objectively they won't represent better value than the standard pre-order. They're mostly just for people who want to add to the development fund of the game, because the bonus for everyone is a better game at the end of it. There's no shame in going for the standard order though - it's all helpful to us!

Patupi
11-07-2011, 22:43
Mainly I was just curious, I was commenting on the old forums when there was a considerable amount of pondering about what the bonuses would be and whether they would be semi-useful in-game things or freebees etc. I think names of the soldiers, faces, as well as useful (but not earthshaking) buildable items were mentioned, but it's been a while since I checked that forum. I can't pre-order buy right now (things are a little tight here) but am hoping to get it in a week or two. What I've seen (especially on your new snazzy site!) is very impressive. It certainly seems more in-depth than any such game I've seen before both in the background and the game mechanics. Good job and I hope I'll get to preview the alpha version soon :)

MickeyC
11-08-2011, 09:17
hmmm, not sure having names in the release is really much of a bonus, since you can change names anyway can't you? might be nice for some to think that random person on the other side of the world has a soldier with their name, but oh well, not sure where I am going with that. Let's just say I'm not a fan of that bonus - but I could just opt out if I wanted to I suppose

anotherdevil
11-08-2011, 19:07
Yeah you can change the names. Secondly the names are in two sets, first and last names, so the chances of both your names coming together. Thirdly they're randomly generated, so the chances of you getting your name in your game with all these points... Quite low

iamkyon

The idea was to give each premium pre-orderer a chance to add a full name (a given name or a pseudonym, their choice) into a separate, hard-coded pool of soldier monikers. The resulting database would then be scrutinised by the community in order to prevent abuse.

There was also talk about fleshing out these recruits by filling in more personal details (age, nationality, service history), or even by giving them fixed stats and physical appearance.

Any chance of getting a hard copy of the game?
As much as I love DD's, there really isnt anything quite like having a hard copy of one of your favorite games that can work independently of a DD service or online connection. Even the ability to install the game on a computer that has no or will never have a connection.
I know its a minor thing... but its something to think about....
Im going to stick with my premium regardless of the bonus because I love GoldHawk for what they have done and being so open to the forums for suggestions to help shape the game (a game for the fans molded by the fans)...

How can I get my premium pre-order badge? I shy away from posting on the forums, but I've had a preorder for the game since the start. Can't wait for the next, fairly playable build... although I will miss attacking the glassy shed of evil.

Chris
11-10-2011, 17:54
Ghost - no, not right now I'm afraid. Maybe we'll consider it later.

Darkwing - did you get the Desura gift email? That has the details in it and was sent to the Paypal address you pre-ordered with. If not, email me and I'll sort you.

Oh, I wasn't insinuating you couldn't recall what was discussed only a few weeks ago, that was merely a quote function fail on my part. My post was meant as a summary of the stuff that was brought up on the defunct forums, so that discussion could pick up from where we left off.

Claiming partial credit for the ideas I showcased, however, was just mean! For a moment there, new forumites probably mistook me for a real thinker!
